Oversize Sign Set-up

There has been some discussion about oversize sign set-up. This is what I do that works well. Soft split vinyl signs for the front of the Landcruiser and a single hard sign on an alloy frame that drops in my rear bait board holes on the back of the boat

does look neat but - Hate to be the fun police but if you get pulled over.....
front indicators and parkers are blocked and you need an orange flashing light as well (roof top)

I had my front sign on a tilt up frame on a front rola roof rack after (getting warned by the boys in blue - but that was a few years ago....)

Is the orange flashing light required during the day? I know it is at night, but not sure about day.

Changed about 5 years back, you can tow up to 2.7M after dark with a flashing light otherwise no towing.
Also flashing light from memory is only for other oversizes (height/length etc) after dark or over a certain size like 2.9 in daytime.

Interesting that the guide sheet John posted shows a boat with the sign in the bow rail!

Thanks Rob - good to know, when the Police pulled me over it was for light obstruction but they also pointed out the insurance company could wipe its hands if you did not comply - that (along with safety) has always stuck in my mind

I would have thought a rotating light at night would be more of a hinderance to other road users. 2.7 metres on the road isn’t to bad on the HWY’s imo.

When towing after dark I have just put the beacon on my car roof, just like a prime mover does when towing oversize. I must admit I only go thru this rigmoral when doing long trips, shorts trips down to the metro ramps I dont bother with any of it much like everyone else with a yank boat!

Have a look on Main Roads website, what it basically says is, under 3 metres in width no flashing light for daytime use, you will however need red/yellow flags on the extremities. For night time you must be under 2.7 metres and use an orange flashing light visible in all directions, however the killer will be the following "Side marker lamps every 2 metres along both sides of the load and yellow or white front clearance lamps". Also remember that you can't move you boat on public holiday weekends, peak hours or on the Mitchell, Kwinana or Graham Farmer freeways.

If you need to get a RAV 1 permit its pretty straight forward and easy to do, I would suggest that you read it carefully and carry it with you.

you are correct re the Forrest Hwy, but on the brochure it states that over 2.7 it's a blanket ban. However that doesn't seem to be supported by the RAV 1 rules booklet, there are other variations as well between the brochure and the rule book, for example its the towing vehicle that has the permit normally but in the brochure they state that the boat trailer has the permit.

I think that may be referring to the actual carrying of the permit itself maybe?

When I heard and followed ya about the 2.7 change I rang them to confirm then queried why such a change wasn’t emailed to permit holders as they must have every holders contacts on file.

They said it was too difficult

Yep, rules pretty much covered previously now

I've got the flashing orange light, but only need it for night.

As far as my lights go, indicators and headlights are still visible. Park lights aren't, but no issue there during the day.
