pe2 spin reel

hi, looking for a rod/reel to fish 20lb mainly jigging but probably bait as well. Was thinking demon blood saltist 6'4 rod which seems to get a good review in here. I like the look of the catalina reels can only seem to find 4000 size would that be too big for 20lb? I found 3500 size but seems to be for japanese market only. Any other reel suggestions?  Stella 4000sw would be nice but a bit pricey.

Cheers

Catalina reels are about $600 -$650 on a good day

But they are definately bigger than a 20lb reel (more like 40lb)

but something of that size would be perfect for a 64 combi jerk

either that or a shimano bio master sw 4000 would be good also

 Hi Rob

The rod your interested is rated Pe2-4 which depending on what line (brand)your going to run would see somewhere between 30 and 60lb, thats just a rating and general guide to go off.

I have a 4000 and 4500 in the Saltiga and have a CJ which balances well with the 4500 well- the Catalina's are a good reel mate and I am sure there a few forum user's who have them that rate them highly- 600 is a good price in Australia for a cat but Japan prices are about 100 less than that.

Saltiga braid in PE-2 @35lb will give you over 300 mtrs on a 4000 model.

Whats your budget though? or it will get out of control for sure

Catalina 4000 for sure

with that budget you have a fair bit of thinking to do- up to you but just stick with the Cat at a 4000 model, but with the rod go for a Catalina model called the 61S, rated to suit 4000 reels and PE2-3- that gives you your 20lb mark.

Honestly 20lb and some of the PE lines now are really thin, the Catalina rods are good quality and if you shop aound they are on special for 299 or cheaper- but there are heaps of light sticks but I would stick with a good reel as priority.

do a bit of research but I can say that I have a Catalina rod which i use my 3000's on- the Nabura 67S and its a little champion, just have to buy another Branzino seeings I sold the last one

If your

wanting to fish 20lb (pe1.5) you'd be better off looking at smaller reels like Stella SW 4000, Certate, saltiga game, twinpower 4000 etc.

Also look at lighter jig rods within the pe1-3 class. Any pe2-4 stick would be way too stiff to run 20lb over.

Thanks for the advice guys. Yeh thinking the 4000 size is too big. Considering ordering a 3500 size catalina from Japan, have seen them as low as 45,000YEN which is about $500, otherwise might hold out for a second hand stella 4000SW.

Have a look on their website- you pay freight and no warranty is the only catch...

I run a Certate 3012 with 20lb on it- holds 300 meters of shinobi braid, if you really want the 20lb then go the 3000 sizes in the Daiwa and 4000? for Shimano

My Brother in law is running

Wed, 2014-05-28 14:50

My Brother in law is running his Catalina 4000 on a JM Saber Game. Its a awsome setup for PE3.

His best to date on it was a 17kg dhu in 35m and the rod/reel handle it nicely.

Good price too mate- take it in with you when you decide on a shop/rod, balance it up for what you want... you can run 20lb you will just have a shitload.

very cool

For a grand I would have bought the temple reef mytho ($500) and a sustain 4000 ($400) leaves a bit for line. Its by far the nicest combo I've used. So light, a lot lighter than the daiwa combo jerk which I have also used. I run ygk gsoul pe2 35lb on mine and have jigged 165g jigs out with whitey very easily. Best fish to date is a 8kg dhu. Haven't used it a lot but.

Soon to be added to the collection is a Stella 4000fi.

For jigging I'd prefer a nicer rod than reel. The rod makes so much differrence.

I ended up with a shimano type-j rod. Feels nicely balanced with the 4k. Its  6ft 2 or 3 so gives me the versatility I was after should be good for plastics, jigging but able to throw a popper or stickbait at a push. Bluewater also had some metal witch rods on the shelf. They looked awesome but the budget was already about blown.
