OH jigging reel under $400

Hi, looking for an OH reel primarily for sambo jigging, planning to run 80lb braid. Any suggestions with a budget of under $400? Thinking along the lines of Fin-Nor Marquesa MA20, Daiwa Saltist LD20 but not sure if these are suitable for 80lb?

Cheers,

I have 3 of the 30s and have been great for the last 12 months, have outlasted saltist and even accurate boss magnum.  I think they are great value for the price.

I  have been using a MA20 for the past couple of years and rate that reel better than most OH's from Daiwa and Shimano.  I fingd the handles sloppy on those 2 brands.  I have been running 50lb bottom bashing and have caught heaps of sambo's plus all the other demersals and it has been flawless.  I am about to step my rod up to something like a live fibre as I am sick of bottom bouncing with jig rods and re spool it with 80lb soon.

If I was buying another OH today I would buy the same again

I probably should add I prefer to do my jigging with spin reels (i use saltigas) but if you want to jig with an overhead the fast retrieve would be a bonus

Looks like you can get a Talica 12 single speed for about $450 delivered on ebay - but always a bit wary of dodgy sellers, lack of warranty etc. Leaning towards the Fin-nor seems a good deal at $299 (or $335 for the 2 speed).

I like my deep jig 200 rod and was planning to stick this reel it on a Shimano deep-jig 400 but read they are a bit of a broomstick, so maybe monster-mesh max instead or one of the online stores also has samaki jig pro pe5-7 at $225 (apparently half price).

Throw the Penn Torque in to this mix if you can get it cheap enough. The Talica and Saltiga star drags are just a tad over the $400 mark. I reckon the Saltiga star drags are a great reel. My brother has a Penn Torque 25N and its sensational.

I kind of think though you might be blowing your budget with any of those three.

really put 80lb on it? those reels dont have the drag available to accomodate that sort of pressure, just get some Pe4 or somthing, or 40lb toughline. toughline tends to break alot higher than stated, and its cheap

MA20 and 30

Both have 40lbs, nearly 20kg of drag if you were to ever need it.  I use 80lb braid on my 30 simply as it has more abrasion resistance and if you have to lock it up you can.

Talica 12

Pay the extra dollars!
I have talica 8, 12, and a MA12. The marquesa's will never compare to the talica although are a very good reel. Got bricked by a few sambos today, only wish I chucked the big gear at them first! Talica 12 is my choice of weapon for your larger than average sambo...
And overhead all the way

Old post and I gather you've probably sorted something out by now - but there's a new player in the sub $400 jigging range. The Jigging Master Ocean Devil. I have a few sitting here - they look good, and the price is good, but I haven't fished one yet.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Yes I have a 2020. Brilliant reel but nowhere near enough line capacity to put 80lb braid on it.

What are you after and depths etc. as a Saltiga Z 30 has more line capacity and is very good. They are no longer making them but you could still pick one up.
