They were saying that during summer, the penguins shed so loose their ability to be waterproof but still go for a stroll in the water to cool down - when the beach isnt full of people.
I was of the belief that there was a colony on Garden Island near the navy base and there are also penguins on the other islands within Shoalwater Bay so i wonder where these numbers factor into the population numbers they are quoting.
I've visited Penguin Island a few times....have only ever seen one in there enclosure for show, never of there beaches.
Have seen small group having a splash not far from the D9 in the sound a few times, agree there not isolated to penguin island that's for sure. Plenty of days of 35 so there tourist dollars will be affected.
Its a great result that theyve canned the construction on the island, was pretty ridiculous that actually got approved to begin with.
Now we just need an investigation into the real cause of the decline in population and not be afraid to point the finger at a government body (if it turns out theyre at fault).
In the article it states an 80% decline in population from 2007, coincidently Water Corp was given permission in 2004 to start dumping industrial "treated" water from its outfall pipe only 4km away from penguin island which regularly records off-spec waste being dumped.
Have been numerous fish/bird-kills in the area which always seem to come back "inconclusive".
Higher salt levels in sound ? Few years time we can all stand down beach ,( speedos only) holding hands singing happy songs . You would think climate change could be factor .you Could have a lovely hippy lady screaming at you at rocko lights . Calling you a polluter / dolphin Killer / environment killer f—k it was funny , still remember it like yesterday . Didn’t stop the 2 lady’s wearing clothes ( thank god) and there rubber thongs..
Over years and years and years playing in Shoalwater bay, we never saw a penguin swimming but that didn't stop the speed limit in the bay being cut right down. Since going out from Woodies, we see them regularly halfway to GI swimming around like the little tuna birds they are.
C'mon mate, we know they don't use science to figure this sort of stuff out. I'd hazard a guess and say those penguins are studied alot more thoroughly than demersal stocks.
I've been there when a 'school'? of the buggas came ashore. I was in awe as they ran up the beach totally surrounding me. I thought they were fish until they ran out of the water. Would have been at least a hundred.
Dunno how many would be attacked by sharks tho as they are super agile

Only ones we have seen have been under the boardwalks. The man made structures gave them a fair bit of protection.
I suspect the seagulls are a bit of a problem

Food for thought anyway.

Will they be installing a large thermometre so the Penguins know when it hits 35 degrees?
In all seriousness how many Penguins are found in the sand dunes having died of heat exposure on a 35 degree day each time?
Officially off the Pies bandwagon
