People Breaking your Gear

How do you guys handle deckie mates breaking your shit on the boat. Took out my brother in law who fishes a lot and he broke a rod, a drink holder and a fixing for my clears. The the two fixings cost me $20 to replace but the rod is going to be $90 and I don't really want to ask for the money and no offer was forthcoming.

I've taken out other mates just squidding and have two boxes of jigs and say one is fine to use, the other is user replaces. Thinking of setting same rules for mates who want to come out and don't have their own gear and borrow the Mrs' gear i.e. set the break it and replace it agreement before we head out. I've also thought about buying a few cheaps combos off Gumtree for deckies to use but my house is already full of rods and reels.

How do you guys go about providing gear for mates, family etc who want to come out for a fish?

Was he being a dickhead or was it an accident?

If he intentionally damaged it then I would ask him to pay for it. Chances of you being paid are slim so if you are keen to battle then good luck.

Personally, if I went out on someone's boat and broke something I would offer to replace it.

+1, if they said "don't worry about it" I'd buy-em a carton or something to val (not that I ever broke anything)

I'd never go out on someone elses boat without giving (not offering) some $'s for fuel, would supply drinks/snaks etc, would help them wash the boat down etc when getting back (if convienient for all), some people... well....

Part of being a boat owner.

I have a few old combos that I lend to people when bottom bashing. Pretty hard to kill the old toriums on a jigwrex.

but if a deckie/mate broke a rod and didn't offer to replace (I wouldn't ask) then the offers of being a deckie would slow down.

Fishing gear is kinda different story i think, but Boat stuff is a tough one. had a few things broken here and there but is it wear and tear or clumsyness?

Last one was the lid on the live well, it was open and whilst pulling pots someone leant on it and it broke at the hinges...

You break it, you buy it has always been the unspoken agreement among my family and friends..

General wear and tear items understandable, but generally someone will offer to cover it before anyone ever has the chance to ask

Im a deckie usually for a few on fw. Ive borrowed gear off mates and used it for a day. High end gear too, ive never broken anything but if i were too its borrowed on the basis of if i break it i buy a replacement. Usually after using gear ive borrowed ill give the owner some jigs. Its always a hard one with family, usually they dont have an idea of what things cost boating or fishing wise.

For all those with kids it only gets worse. I have 3 sons all in their late 20's who have their own life, jobs, houses ect. Every time we go fishing they use all my gear, I supply bait, fuel, boat. They have their own rods but never do you get a "would you like some coin for fuel and bait dad"? Just part of the deal and I would never ask them as would just go by myself anyway for the same cost but prefer their company. Joys of being a boat owner ay!

Not an issue for me

Thu, 2016-01-07 14:18

If someone comes on my boat and gear breaks, it's no big deal.  It could have easily happened when I was using it.

If it continued to happen then I might reconsider inviting them back.

Thu, 2016-01-07 14:41

Agree that fixings are part of it and bygones are bygones in regard to the broken rod but reckon setting some ground rules before handing over a combo will be the go in the future. Took a mate out on Tuesday off Busso and he reached for my Biomaster/Catalina combo and I just laughed and said "nah mate, not that one".

goes without saying, you break it you pay for it, or atleast offer. Fark me! What has the world come too! Hey, you own a boat, must be rich? Yeah right, Fark off ! And inlaws, tell the missus to sort her brothers out. When she finds out your losing money???

And sorry GAV475, you're a top bloke, thats being a DAD, not a boat owner. I doubt when my 2 boys are older i could ever ask them for "coin", i would be happy to spend time with them. Thats Priceless!

Deckies sometimes need to be taught

Thu, 2016-01-07 20:14

Experienced fishermen, like the FW community, know all to well how much our hobbie costs. I would be very surprised if any FW's didnt replace broken gear and offer to help with expences.

One off deckies like family (especially extended family), work mates, friends of friends etc generally have no idea what the day has cost or the cost of the gear. "pick a rod and reel up for $40 in Kmart cant you" "just broke that small thing on the boat, they would be cheap to replace" You know like the transducer.. "Only lost a few of his rigs while fishing" Yeah with $15 worth of hooks, swivels, leader,Lumo occys and lead.

Even some experienced boaters but not experienced fishermen need to be told not to bash your new graphite rod cause it cost $400 and is not an uglystik.

A little pep talk while driving to the ramp and some advice on gear handling never goes astray along with perhaps some advice on how to pay for busted gear,, cash, direct deposit, BCF gift card to the value or just replace it with exactly the same but a new one...Lol

I know over the years i have deckied on many different boats and for some reason or other i'm prone to be the one who brakes their cheap ass, sun damaged plastic rod holders. 1 with a monster cobia, 1 just broke when i put the rod in it and 1 broke with to much force from my fat ass hitting it on a rough day. 2 cheap ass plastic holders of the same design were hand delivered the next day and the last lucky guy (i wanted to go out with him a lot more) got 2 stainless steel ones delivered to replace the shitty ones he had.

Cheapest way of going fishing on a boat is to have a mate with a boat so dont abuse the privelage.

Always had a saying - shit happens.
And if you take friends/family out - well shit happens.
Never asked nor expected anyone to pay for anything, but have to admit than other than crab scoops and nets my and the Mrs (deckie) fishing gear is ours and ours only. I don't even touch hers (or I would be dead!!!). Usually go out with about 3-4 different setups each but again the other setups aren't for anyones use and it is made very clear.
When taking people fishing have a few older rods/reels that I don't use anymore that gets chucked onboard, and if they break so what

+1 Madmerv, welcome on my boat anytime!

Errant sinkers are my achilles heel.....if someone is good enough to take you fishing DONT smash your lead into the gelcoat hullside on retrieve, leave your sinker swinging around wildly between spots because you cant be assed letting out enough line to lay it on the deck/slipping it into a spare rod holder recess, drop them from height onto the deck when rebaiting etc...its disrespectful and as other have said, some people underestimate the time/cost of even minor indiscretions on boats.

If all else fails and your mates still dont get your more subtle overtures, get one of those "my boat doesnt run on thanks" stickers!

After taking out clueless mates for a long time, lending gear and setting up their gear, I felt like I was running a charter, so solo now unless get a clued up deckie ( not that many around !). That said always more fun fishing with another person.

Deckies

Sat, 2016-01-09 08:30

I really enjoy having someone else on the boat so don't ask for payment or anything. How much extra does that person cost in fuel?

Of the deckies I have taken out from FW and work, they have all been respectful of the boat and brought their own combos so haven't had a drama.

Yeah I agree with that one. I don't accept fuel money but my 90hp runs on a sniff of fuel. I did around 16nmi the other day with a mate and the refill cost me about $11 so no way am I going to ask for $5 fuel. If someone offers to feed the parking machine with change I won't say no though.

yeah ... we are all in a different boat there. my costs are usually quite a bit more.

80km round trip just to the ramp. (towing this adds up)

my day on the water is usually 50ish NM so min $100 fuel. add in 2st oil...everything else and if mates don't start chipping in it becomes a piss take.

having said that my usual deckie used to have a boat and always chips in so all good.

Good deckies

Sat, 2016-01-09 12:04

I have a few fisho mates that look after me well.

We usually fill up on our way to the ramp. They would automically go to the counter and pay for the fuel while Im at the pump.  They also bring all bait. I just supply the boat, drinks, munchies and berley.  This was never a spoken agreement. It just happens that way.  They also have their own gear and help wash down the boat etc.

On the other hand, I sometimes take non-fisho mates and family members fishing.  I usually supply almost everything. They just bring the refreshments. Haha

In regards to broken gear, as mentioned by some members, accidental breakerages and normal wear & tear do happen. I don't expect reimbursments due to that.  Just spending time with family and friends is invaluable.
