Perth Boat Ramps
Unsure if someone has attempted this before but I think we should put together a campaign to change the current design of the Perth boat ramps. I don't believe that the current designs are good enough. Meaning that they should be the floating platoon type, the type that has a "rubber' edge to protect you boat if it is tied up to it and it floats up and down as the tide comes in and out.
We all pay a lot of money for our boats and should expect for them not to be potentially damaged every time we use a ramp we are paying to use.
The current situation where there is concrete poles can cause damage to you boat, I know that you can buy floats and then put them between your boat and the ramp it will in most cases avoid this. But most ramps this is still not viable as you always kind of need someone in the boat ensuring the floats are between the boat and ramp pier especially if the ramp is full and you have no option but to go on the side where the wind will be blowing you back into the pier.
We all pay a lot of money to use the ramps and feel like we should be getting a little more bang for our buck. they seem to be more than willing to fine us if the parking ticket has expired.
I am unsure though who to direct this campaign too though, is it the local council, The Department of Transport and or Main Roads?
What are everyone's thoughts?

I quite like the design they
I quite like the design they have now (solid jetty with chaffers) at my local boat ramps which are Ocean Reef, Mindarie or Hilarys. I dont find our boat gets damaged as most ally boats have unpainted strip running along the outside of the gunnels for resting up against chaffers and I'm prety sure fibreglass boats have a rubber strip or something similar. I think minadire is the only ramp i've seen with unprotected concrete chaffers although its so calm at the ramp the boat doesnt get pushed hard into it and damaged and most others ramps have wooden chaffers with rubber protection on them too so Im struggling to see how a boat should get damaged by these. I'd much rather the stability of a solid jetty with chaffers than a floating pontoon. It is much safer for people boarding and disembarking too. From your comments Im guessing your boat might not have any edge protection or maybe the particular ramp you use isn't up to scratch? I wouldnt support campaigning to change the current design of ramps but maybe some could use some maintenance/upgrades.

ramps
mate, start with Rick Mazza who , fishers and shooters party, who was elected to represent rec fishos opinions. You are entitled to your opinion and have the right to ask the question. I think the ramps could be better protected but are far better than some, like bundegi in exmouth that eats boats. I would much rather see an improvement in the ramp Facilities like a fish cleaning station for starters. Some prefer to clean them at home but others dont. I have a trench digging labradore that excavates wherever I have cleaned fish so it would be handy to clean up before I get home.

Kalbarri VMR Jetty
mtre9209,
They floating jetty near the Kalbarri VMR is a flooting potoon type as you metion and rises and falls with the tide, it is very stable and presents no issues with people getting on and off boats, very easy to approach and leave the jetty, has rubber buffers the length of the jetty. More importantly there are no jetty fees and most of the time parking is not a problem.
I think we get spoilt for choice and the facilities that we now have in Kalbarri, great place to live, I can recommend to all it is a great place to bring the family and have a break, great for Dad and fishing is plentyfull, beach and river safe for kids and plenty for Mum to do, good cafes, restaurants, Kalbarri pub is second to none, locals could be a bit more friendly, but worth a visit.
Great fishing from a boat, beach, rocks, jetty, river, or up north along the cliffs and beaches, mud crabs and blue swimmers as well, even marron in the Hutt River.
Yes I am biased, but better to be biased rather that jealous of what Kalbarri has to offer.

Likewise Geraldton-we have
Likewise Geraldton-we have two excellent ramps, unfortunately though not much more than 500 meters apart.
Could really do with one at the north end of town (Drummonds) to spread the effort a bit.
The floating pontoons are great, one is installed at Batavia Marina for cruiseship tenders mainly.
Normally though the floating pontoons are intended for areas with bigger tides.
Personally Id rather see more facilities at places such as Lancelin than changing ones that are already in place

Point Peron Boat Ramp
Point Peron boat ramp was changed from wooden solid post access platform to floating platforms. On the original wooden platform I would pull along side using the wooded posts to land the boat gunnels on with no damage. The first time I pulled up to the new floating platform and due to the platform being low to the water, the boat bow contacted the rubber strip along the float platform edge first, it pushed the rubber down and my boat bow contacted the metal mount strip for the platform rubber leaving a nice scratch down the paint work, also another small mark where the rope tie off cleats are very close to the edge on the platform which also hit the bow. This is avoidable by not coming in on the angle I'm used too and I also now wait for other boats to move so I don't have to go around them. Another problem I find with Peron is they put the platform support posts on one side of the platform instead of the middle, so one side you have good access for boat/rope handling and the other side you have to pass the ropes around the posts.
So for some people it maybe an improvement, but not for me.

I wrote to point peron sea rescue about this (and so dd a number of others) soon after the new ramps where installed they said it was councils responsibility but would pass it on to the relevant poeple this was over two years ago...guess what NOTHING has been done, what a surprise.

agree
point peron ramp could have been great but as is not impressed , ie! cleats too close to floating platform and one side literally unusable due to support post too close to the edge.and the sand drift is becoming an issue

filleting tables
I like the idea of filleting stations like at coral bay. When paying $8 - $10 to use the ramp "facility" I think it should be included.
Personally I have no problems with the construction of the north of the river ramps but have certainly seen some turkeys come in to hot and damage their rigs.

My main gripe is boat ramps
My main gripe is boat ramps where the jetty is 1m + away from the ramp. Make it hard to push the boat off the jetty to line up onto the trailer if the wind is pushing the boat onto the jetty.
Ocean reef is really bad for this, I always pick a jetty where the wind will blow the boat off the jetty.

havnt been in perth for a
havnt been in perth for a while...but slwoly getting a few invites on a few boats over here in nz and one major thing i have realised here...
the level of wash down facilities....though there is a catch. You generally have to pay for this to get a key to use it.
it consists of:
high pressure hose fresh water hose & in the ground they have pipes the have some spray comming out of the floor that you go forward and back with your trailer to remove all salt from underneath. its pretty good.
and from my points in perth filleting tables.
a hard days fishing still beats work

Filleting tables
From my point of view I think the ramps that charge for their use should include filleting table, and by tables I mean at least two, or make them big enough for four people at a time to use.

I'm hearig a few grumbles
that the new ramp here in Leeman will be too steep for sedans, also too exposed to the southerly when she blows, haven't seen it upclose yet but guess time will tell.
Update: They the powers to be think it might be open for Xmas, but don't hold your breath with more delays.
