PINK SNAPPER SLAUGHTER

On sunday after the squid comp was in buying a burger from the woodies boat ramp shop, When a guy come in asking if anyone knew if there were any fisheries inspectors around, with none around that we knew of he proceded to tell us that a boat had jst pulled in the ramp with three guys aboard and that on board with them were over 20 pinkies. It makes me sick to think that there are still ( excuse the french ) assholes out there getting away with this crap.

Yep and there allways will be, you need to get the rego number and a pic of the boat and repot them to the fisheries
at least they can go search there house ,should be fined $5000 min.

I've spent the last couple of nights chasing snapper in 18 knot winds looking around at different spots and not one bite. To hear of this makes me sick.

Ben , as Paul said ring the fisheries give them as much info as you can , additional pictures and rego or boat discription helps, a few years ago i saw on two occasions divers cleaning out crays at mindarie area, rang the fisheries and told them all the details i had and they informed me they had 4 other people ring in with similar details which gave them enough amo to pursue them

not really

Tue, 2009-09-15 18:44

Not really mate, having worked with fisheries research and coming accross some serious busts down the coast, the best advice is to take details rather than act.  One example is when my work collegue and I came accross 6 islanders and about 150 litres of trocus meat just north of Pt Quobba, knives everywhere and some evil eyes after telling them what they'd done and what I planned to do about it.

In this day and age where people aren't worried about knocking someone off (just look at the news) theres absolutely no point being a hero over a fish.  Your opinion may differ, but thats how I look at it...

Cheers,

Adam

Good on that bloke for taking photos and trying to find a fisho inspector (what were the chances though) but better to take photos and call the cops than front the blokes and get your heads smacked in.

Hope they catch up with those a-holes and throw the book at them.

It was worst in the arvo

Tue, 2009-09-15 19:10

It was worst in the arvo after the squid comp.

My friend went out with his family and got 2 snapper.. and to see everyone come around him

He reckons some boats caught well over 10 fish over 70cm but didnt care after he asked them if the knew their limits.

Well hopefully the fisherys read this and are out in force over the next couple weeks,,

If anybody sees a boat take more than the limit out on the water,,call it it to fishwatch,,someone might say G'day to them back at the ramp. Smile

Education required to change attitudes

Tue, 2009-09-15 20:42

Took my 72 year old pop out for a fish. It was difficult for him to throw fish back as he has always caught what he want and took what he wanted. He grew up during tough times and fish caught were all the family could afford to eat.

After explaining that stocks are dwindling we had a purple patch and caught big snapper. He reckons all the doom and gloom is goverment crap concerning fish stocks.

None the less, I think education is required to change attitudes and therefore will be teaching my kids to only take what is required and catch n release when possible.

The problem is that taking photos of boats and regos will not amount to much IMO

You need a picture of the illegal catch.

Does anybody know the limit for boats ?

I agree with you flagpole, it is people like them that wreck it for everyone.
I also agree with what Adam said, and that it is better to get all the info you can rather than confront them, as a lot of the people involved in this sort of carry on would think nothing of doing something to hurt you.
With new rules and licences about to come into place, we can only hope the extra revenue earned by the government might go back into policing our fisheries and stopping the 1 percenters from ruining it for the rest of us.

limit is 2 per person but only one over 700 and the boat limit applies as per normal. realy sucks when people do this and its always the way you do the right thing and get checked over and tossers like this get away with it

Fish Watch

Wed, 2009-09-16 10:29

I Have the Fish Watch number in my mobile (1800815507) for just these occiasions. Had a situation at Hillarys where fishers were taking undersize Skippy and lots of them trying to fill 9 litre bucket. Called the number and they had someone down within 30 min, luckily they had been at Ocean reef checking catches. Not sure what the outcome as I left before they finished talking to them.

Wed, 2009-09-16 17:45

yeh fish watch is a good thing , but just pictures of the boat is quite useless , only to be put on record and i spose they will keep an eye out for that boat if it happens or is reported agian , needs pictures of the illegal catch in the boat , solid evidence.

Fish watch is good but you can also get duty officer mobile numbers of the Fisheries officers in your area to call and you will get a quicker response that way.

Good bit of info Got-1.  Might be good to get some of those numbers and puclish them on line for everyone to have in their phone.

Calling is the best option.

Wed, 2009-09-23 12:01

I have 2 chargers in relation to blokes catching undersized fish and both times the police said that sometimes the laws are floored and they agreed with my actions. One of the blokes at Floreat tried to stab me, so don't be to ambitious in approaching people.

I now have that number in my mobile too and at least i feel like i can tell the right person at least. I urge every one to do the same. This is exactly the kind of stuff that fuels mr Moore and hurts the rest of us . PLease please add the number to your phone!

Sat, 2009-09-26 18:07

once again its the 1% that ruin it for all off us. i saw a bloke down at mindarie marina a few years back with a 2 litre bucket full of well undersize (not even 15cm long) pinkies and bream and skippy, i was talking to him for a little bit about size and bag limits but he just didnt care. in the end i got so fired up i grabbed his bucket and tipped all the fish back! about half of the fish swam off wich was a good sign, but that doesnt mean he wasnt back there the next day/week/month doing exactly the same thing........ In my 5 or so years of fishing around mindarie marina (and i use to fish it very reguarly) , ive seen 3 fisheries inspecters there checking boats! that just doesnt make sense to me. its a very simple question in everyones mind, why arent there more fisheries out there? i just hope with these new laws and regulations that they can patrol popular areas like this more often.
