please help, poor radio signal strength?

hey guys.

i have a 27meg (GME GX294 i think) radio and when i leave shore i can log on fine with sea rescue but when im out deep i dont get a strong enough signal to be in touch with them cause im a long way out. obviously this is a big problem and im not going offshore until its fixed.  i can however hear other boast talking to sea rescue, i assume they are closer to me which is why i can hear them. could this be a result of me having weak battery power?? becuase i know my betteries are not very good or do you guys think it might be another problem. i have only had the boat 6 months and didnt have problems before butthen again wasnt going out so far so its hard to tell.

thanks alot.

mark.

I have the same drama with mine. It is the GME Gx300. Will have to try a new aerial and see if that helps. Thanks Russ.

Cheers

I think 27mHZ are line of sight, approx 30km reception is best iv'e had with my GME300. Not sure what you classify as ofshore tho. Although I have heard farther afield stations based in Dunsborough (from ROcko) - I didn;t try and contact them. There are also dead spots. southern end of Garden Island and Bent Street for instance just don;t seem very reliable for me.

Radios

Better to spend the extra money and go VHF.Better range and clarity of signal.
Of all the boats up here more than 85% would have VHF,same goes for Exmouth.I can contact to the base clearly from the islands a distance of 30nm with Vhf and not even get a squeak on the 27meg set
A licence is needed but it only takes 5 or 6 evenings to get one,all of the sea rescue groups run the courses

Aerial and cable

A new aerial and cable will most likely fix.

Never shorten an aerial cable as the length is "tuned" for best perfrmance. Also go for 2.4m areials.

Priorities!

Mate get some new batteries first if you think they are bad!  At least you can start up and drive in.  You might be unable to call or start the boat soon.

About $200 for a 600 marine pro - got one on Saturday for my tub.
