Point Perron

Hi Everyone,
I have just bought a canoe and I am looking to take it around point perron with my young bloke.
I was wondering what can be caught out there and what bait should I use.
My young bloke absolutely loves fishing and I have only a small idea on catching fish and want to learn more about it to teach him.
If anyone can offer any tips on what is there or places to take the canoe that would be awesome.
Thanks Guys
Happy Fishing

I have kayak fished for many
I have kayak fished for many years around Point Peron- I now fish from the Jetski, and still fish in the same area.
There are three fishing sides to Point Peron, and some caution should be used depending on wind direction and swell forecast, like the other day when a 2.5m swell was running.
At the moment there are heaps of herring around the reefs-troll a small spinner behind the kayak and you will find them.
However if you want to stay around Penquin Island, you have more fishing options and also a bit safer for the young bloke.
Plenty of whiting on the sand banks, then squid on all the weed banks-look for broken weed ground. Also heaps of herring yesterday on both sides of the Island.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Have just come back from
Have just come back from Point Peron- It's like a pond out there. No wind-low swell.
Just pick your morning- don't go out in afternoon when seabreeze kicks in.
Plenty of safe spots close in around Safety Bay(salmon off the beach in close yesterday, video on here)
Also you have Bird Island and Shag Rock in close.

Be careful where you fish
Be careful where you fish around Shoalwater, lots of confusing rules regarding the marine park.
Fisheries brochures will say you can fish, but http://parks.dpaw.wa.gov.au/park/shoalwater-islands will tell you a different story.
Download the map of the Marine Park to see the different zones.

your fine fishing in
your fine fishing in shoalwater bay, just no spearfishing. The front of penguin island may be fishing free but I beleive it only applys to landbased fishos

There are two "No Fishing
There are two "No Fishing Zones" close to Penquin Island, but not around the perimeter of Penquin Island.
They are marked clearly with yellow buoys: Around Seal Island and then on the Southwest of Penquin Island, I think it's called Second Rock.
There's also a No Fishing Zone down near Port Kennedy.
All the boat ramps around Rockingham have signs showing the area's.

Howdy mate. We spent the best
Howdy mate.
We spent the best part of 30 years holidaying down at Point Peron in houses which stood opposite the water treatment plant, but have since been taken down.
just after the boat ramp/water treatment factory, there are 4 car bays on the left hand side of the road (where two of the holiday houses were) I suggest parking there, dragging your Canoe's over the dune and playing there. There is plenty of flat water (trusting you pick your conditions, and the islands are nice to kayak around. When we used to stay there, we would catch whiting, herring, flathead, flounder and all sorts of other stuff not far off the beach.
