Polystyrene foam transport box performance

Can anybody tell me how long I can expect my fish to stay frozen in one of those polystyrene foam transport boxes. It will be filled to the brim with frozen fillets, sealed with duct tape and transported in my car with the aircon going. It has been recommended to me to not use ice in the box.

 Check with fisheries

You might want to check with fisheries to see how much you can carry, last I checked it was 20kg and 10kg at the Abrolhos.

cheers

Dale

Did it exactly as you said (filled with ice and fillets) a couple of years ago from Exxy to Perth (about 12 hours drive). Absolutely no problems, Still as frozen when put in the box.

Not having a go or anything, for those that aren't aware, from fisheries website:

Transporting recreationally caught fish by courier

Recreationally caught fish can no longer be transported unaccompanied using a commercial courier.

Freezer

Wed, 2013-10-30 16:54

Fill it to the brim with fish or ice if you have to bulk it up but the trick is to put the box in the freezer [if it fits] the night before so you're not putting frozen stuff in to a hot box. Once the lid is on run duct tape round the lid to seal it properly.

Cover it with blankets/ clothing, anything that will keep the sun off it and the contents should stay frozen

Thu, 2013-10-31 13:57

I think that the spirit of the ruling is to regulate those people who take their limit and then courier it home then take their limit again to travel home with. I hardly think that Fisheries will go after people for sending 3 or 4 kgs of fish out of their freezer to family in another State.

If they did, they clearly have too much time on their hands and perhaps should be focussing their attention elsewhere

Thu, 2013-10-31 16:07

I agree cruise control there is clearly a moral difference in that, my point was i dont think they even check it at the places they made the rule for.  However if someone gets caught for whatever reason they will more than likely throw the book.

You have got that right Rig.

I work for a large regional transport company that operates general and freezer trailers out of all those places where lots of fish might be taken like Gero, Carnarvon, Exmouth, Karratha, Hedland, Broome and so on. Never seen or heard of Fisheries at a Depot, never seen or heard of them at our main Depot in Perth. Never even seen any correspondence from Fisheries about it.

More than likely one day they will walk in and if they catch someone then they will be for the high jump no doubt about that.

Pinched

Thu, 2013-10-31 17:07

Was a report in the paper a couple of months back where a bloke fronted up at the depot to collect his and his 4 mates fish from a trip to the Monties and the fisheries were waiting and pinched him once he had it all in the back of his car.

Can't remember the penalty but it would have been a fair whack if you go by the book.

 Before the new statewide

Thu, 2013-10-31 17:43

Before the new statewide fishing rules were bought in, I read the original submission to the minister, fisheries management paper 252. In the report it was stated that  over 3 tonnes of recreationally caught fish  was transported over a 3 month period in 2010 from Exmouth through one courier company.

Clearly there was a problem with people taking more than there possession limit of  20kg.  The same paper also recommended the reduction of the possession limit from 20kg to 10kg.  Thankfully this was rejected by the minister.

also iit might be worth

Thu, 2013-10-31 17:53

also iit might be worth reading the labeling rules in relation to transporting your fish if it is stored in the same container as someone else's.  The rules seem a bit absurd if your travelling with your fish but they are clear. (Page 32/33 of the rules statewide)
