Port Gregory, early December

Hey Guys,

I am fortunate to be heading down from Karratha to Port Gregory in a couple weeks.

I have used the search function, and read a lot about the place, it sounds great.

My main query is:  What species will be on the chew in December? I have never fished this region, and have a limit to how much gear I can take....

Still need to tick whiting on popper off my bucket list... any chance?  Mulloway this time of year?  Tailor?

Mate will be there with his tinny, if the weather is ok :)   Is this region part of the demersal ban?

thanks

One more quick question...

One more quick question... is bait available in Pt Gregory, or do I need to purchase elsewhere. What would be preferred bait for mulloway? I live in Karratha, and have never fished for mullas or tailor before "down south". Are the tailor likely to hit lures / poppers in this location?

yes there is a shop in the park and one just outside but during peak times they do run low, has a bottle shop aswell. nth hampton is about 30min away closest town. i would be using the tailor you catch as bait for the mulloway could also try whitting and mullies, yes tailor will hit lures but if your fishing the beach north of the jetty i found bait was a winner. find a gutter and get ready for some fun. burley never hurts i caught a massive shovel nose years ago up that beach

Good spot to stock up and have a look around. Coastal road is good.

Heres a brief summary of my trip.
Main goal was to get a tailor on popper. Done!

Caught a couple popping from the boat, and one popping from the beach. Also caught average of 6 per evening on baits.

Other target species was mulloway. Caught a few using tailor fillets for bait... like this one

hooked up to another mulloway

Nice sunset (photo taken by missus on phone.)

Managed to get a decent mulloway, about 80cm but didn't get a photo D'OH!

Went to Lucky Bay for a daytrip. Only got a couple tailor, but the place is awesome

Last day saw us all in the boat, with the kids doing a squid session. Got this monster, which promptly offloaded about 2 litres of ink into my mates face, shirt, boat, etc. Was quite funny

The weather was constantly windy, and cold (for a Karratha bloke anyway) but the reef shelters the bay which allowed us to put the tinnie in every day.

Well done Pale Ale

Have to admit I miss the Kcity heat (never would have thought I'd say that). Well done, and that squid shot is a classic. Having been taught by an old codger how to avoid the ink I havent had a spray in ages, but ones due for sure, and always brings a huge laugh from anyone on board.

Have a Navy Clearance diver (Ret.) visiting over Xmas and I owe him an inking, so might plan a trip. :-)

Say Hi to evryone up there esp at the Pharmacy, and Thanks again for the help years ago. Never forgotten.

Bloody whiting on popper is driving me crazy. Tried recently in QLD, tried in Pt Gregory and even tried last night in Karratha. FFS it looks so easy on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6dnwW3kC94

It IS easy...

Mon, 2014-12-15 18:10

...if you're in the right place at the right time! I've got an idea about "where", just don't ask me about "when"! In my case I go whenever I get the chance, and if the tides/moon phase/price of beer in China don't line up and I catch f...all, so be it!

Nice mullas and you can't beat poppered tailor! And if you go squidding enough, you're gonna get inked!
