A question for the jiggers.

A question for those in the know.

When jigging for bottom fish up North, is the action as fast as it is for the Sambos or do you slow the movement down. I am heading up to Gnaraloo on the 8th and are pretty keen to get some jigs down there if the weather is kind enough. We generally fish in 30 - 60 mtrs of water.

Would appreciate any comments.

Stay low (and slow) and you probably won't get as many mack snips either.

I will work on those flutters. Let yo know how i go. We usually use bait but this year we have a soft plastic and jig rule. Looking forward to seeing the difference.

yep slow and low. hence why people use a 'pg' model ratio - enabling the jigs to be worked closer to the bottom and slower

Not sure enabling will be the right word as you can jig slow on a high speed reel, it just depends on your jigging action. I tend to work demersal jigs mostly with the rod, with the reel just taking slack, so reel speed hasnt affected the action much at all. I sometimes twitch wind too, which again still works will most reel speeds. Completely different with mechanical sambo jigging though.

I typically like a sharp lift of the rod then drop to allow to flutter. The best thing to do is to see how your jigs work in the water. It can give you a good idea what action produces what effect and adjust to suit that.

I know this is going to be a stupid question, but, what does the 'pg' model ratio stand for?

Power Gear, lower ratio for better low down torq, can be a bit bothersome if your cranking jigs up out of deep water.

Depends what you want to

Depends what you want to catch? Generally a slower jigging style as discussed for demersal species, a faster style usually attracts Mackerel (which are a menace), Trevally, Amberjack... having said that I have caught heaps of demersals on the faster style, especially Coral Trout and Rankin Cod. Emperors are harder work though.
