A question on what is correct way of doing.

3 boats were trolling lures and livies over a well known wreck.

All was well, then another boat arrived and proceeded to anchor right on top of this wreck to dive on it.

One of the other boats was pretty argivated about this and a word or 2 seemed exchanged with a few hand/ finger signals.

What is the go with this sort of thing?

I for one could not be bothered with getting into an argument, but think it is a wee bit rude to just barge in irrespective of what other vessels are doing.

We had it happen in a fishing

We had it happen in a fishing comp, on our second drift over a wreck a boat pulls up and drops the pick! Wrong in so many ways. Some people just lack common courtesy. You should always bs observant of what others are doing around you.

Rude

Wed, 2011-12-28 20:49

As you stated it was a rude thing to do but sadly they are within their rights to do it. We do not own the patch of water / ground we are fishing on though we would like to think we do and there is bugger all we can do about it and to make it worse, once they put up the diver flag you have to allow for the 50 metre radius exclusion zone.

a question of etiquette i think

good question glastronomic, is it first come first consideration to what they are doing or the ocean belongs to all and if it's within the law I can do it. I don't want to see this develop into a them and us debate but I would like to see people from both sides of the coin (divers & boaters) express their views and most importantly why they have such a view.

No one has to justify their view as we are all entitled to have a view thought on what is the "right thing to do"again I say lets not have a them and us.Have respect for the other than your own point of view

To me,if I arrive at a spot and someone is doing their "thing" and I wish to engage in an activity that will impinge on their activity I'll change my plans and do something else that will not interfere with the boat/person who was there first

Not intended to be a them &

Wed, 2011-12-28 21:19

Not intended to be a them & us topic, just to make clearer in my own mind what I thought of it and if this is realistic.

I just pulled in the lures and went doing something else as I do have all the time in the world to go back.

The 50 mtr exclusion zone was what started the exchange between the 2 other boats.

Maybe invest in a divers flag and float

P.S. towed in a nice new boat with a 140HP? Suzuki 4 stroke eggbeater that stopped in the middle of the ocean back to the marina.

That is the second Suzi 4 banger in 2 weeks that I have towed in!

What wreck?

Thu, 2011-12-29 00:00

Gemini? Happens all the time there. Have fished and dived there often. when we've dived there we'll usually have a chat/discussion if another boat is there and ask if they care if we dive as they fish. We dont mind people fishing in the flag while were down on the wreck we just ask em to avoid the anchor line and we'll descend and ascend on that, not going to hit our heads in 30m. Also had it work both ways though, last time we were the first boat there and had two 6m+ fishing boats bristling with rods drive up to within 5 meters of our flag not a word said to us as we were in the water about to descend and they start burleying and fishing right ontop of us. Just rude to expect something, a bit of conversation and compromise and everyone can be happy.

If people cant share then first in, first served,In the case of dive charters if your talking about the gemini or anything else purposely sunk as a dive wreck fair enough they get priority though.

Had The Debate On Dive Flags Before.

Thu, 2011-12-29 02:02

My understanding on Dive flags is that it is not an exclusion zone but you must reduce your boat speed to 5 knots.within 50 metres of the flag. Correct me if I'm wrong but Iv'e had this debate out on the water before. It's a big ocean out there and if someone drops in on you without any discussion first it's just being rude.

exclusion zone

Here is a link to the diver exclusion zone for anyone in Western Australia

Well worth a read and hopefully every one can get a better understanding of what and what not to do.

So chaps....happy fishing and diving eh

Cheers

its a tough one

Thu, 2011-12-29 07:40

I dive and fish. If I was out there for a dive Id probably have a yarn with the guys trolling, maybe say we'll hang back for 1/2 an hour and get sorted then like to jump in for 45 minutes?

But as these sort of dive sites are few and far between, if you've launched and motored out 10 mile to go for a dive its a big ask to just pack up and go home.

Other thing is that if "mishaps" occur and stupid stuff like burlying next to divers no matter who is "in the right", we may find a blanket rule of no fishing on wreck sites.

On top of that its someones life being played with in the case of burlying-over who gets to troll 50 meters this way or that?

Just like playing chicken with lycra bike riders/couriers-end result could be the same....

Similar happened to me off

Thu, 2011-12-29 17:12

Similar happened to me off ocean reef. Was fishing out near the rocky out crop and accross came two jetskis ripping over the small breaks doing jumps, then they got off had a bit of a snorkel. So i moved the boat over the otherside of the rocks and had another fish only for them to come over that side too. Was very rude and i had the little fella on board so i didnt want to cause a scene. If i was alone it would of been a different story.
