Well done just shows how close the fish are sometimes. Are those blue grouper common in metro waters? Thought they were only down south, obvioulsy not.

I have never caught one on a line before but they are quite prolific on the banks .Just had it for dinner and it was fine, not dhufish standards but still nice.I have heard the big ones are a bit chewy .That was our first on spear as we don't target them usually.

well done mate. i went out

Sat, 2010-08-28 19:56

well done mate.

i went out form two rocks aswell with my uncle and stayed in close. we were driving round the ledges and saw a big blue groper so over my uncle goes looks around for 20 of mins and comes up empty handed. we drove around more and saw a queen snapper and my uncle again spent some time swimming around looking to come up empty handed. then we drove around and my uncle saw a dhuie he spent 15mins trying to hunt this dhuie that was doing laps around him in the caves and then my uncle finaly got the shot and got it 63cm.

it was realynice out there ay. did you see alot of skippy out there??? we saw heaps of them they were following the boat.

good fish mate, and good eating for you.

cheers

Sun, 2010-08-29 19:48

nice spear there fellas, I rate the blue groper as good as a dhuie on the tooth, it's suprising if you're seeing that many that there aren't more caught on rod and reel. We used to get a lot as bycatch when chasing snapper and nannygai back in South Oz.
Do you find the dhuies pretty easy to shoot on scuba or are they a little flighty?

i know you are asking paul

Sun, 2010-08-29 19:56

i know you are asking paul but the one my uncle shot on the week end it was very flighty, it swam in and out of caves. but he says there normaly interested in him while he's diving for crays but wen he gets the gun there gone lol. the one on the week end had a patch where there were no scales so and its in a round hole so i think that someone had a shot at him and the spear pulled thats why he was nerves. my uncle said he saw a big blue groper through the glass panel but as soon as we stopped the boat it was gone.

cheers

They can be hard to get you

Sun, 2010-08-29 19:56

They can be hard to get you need to pretend you haven't seen them as if you head stright for them they spook .Baldies are the worst. If you see a good fish best just sit on the bottom and he carn't resist coming over to check you out ..crunch up a sea urchin they love them.We had a school of snapper one day come close but not close enough to get a shot ,they were all 8kg + fish very frustrating.
