hi guys.
was chatting to a mate the other day about radar, something have no experience with.
just wondering how people find them as far as a safety tool? are they likely to reliably pick up floating bouys form craypots?, floating debris in the water etc?
in the future im hoping to do a lot more trolling, so looking for birds etc understanbdably would be benficial, but was wondering what else people use them for?
im interested in anything that potentially improves safety.
cheers!

I know in Sydney they use them to spot whales when cruising along in the dark.
also good to avoid knobs who don't have lighting on boats

Useful but know its limitations
I use my radar a lot.
Very useful for navigating at night and in other low visibility conditions. I can spot rain rain squalls from dozens of miles away.
In the right conditions I can spot and track birds from several miles, but it has to be fairly calm - anything more than about 2' of chop and it won't be very effective.
You could probably spot craypots in the right conditions as well but it's not something I would rely on.

Great for night travel
If you routinely head out in the dark or return home in the dark then a good radar is very worthwhile.
Furuno are generally considered the pick of the bunch, and the newest digital dome radars are very good and not too expensive. The little 4kw units would be perfect for navigating around Cockburn sound and surrounding areas.

Wouldn't bother in terms of
Wouldn't bother in terms of picking up craypots etc. various clutter and the sea state will have you guessing and probably confuse ya more than anything. Pretty handy for everything else though. I guess if you've got money to throw around, may as well.

If you realy do need to see
If you realy do need to see at night invest in a FLIR system, not cheap but it'll do the job.
