Raising the metro Tailor bar
Submitted by spook on Fri, 2013-06-14 09:55
Got this tailor at 9:30. Went 80cm and fought every bit of it. Knew he was big as it was just a stale-mate for half of the fight, it was an adrenaline rush. Spent my time reviving him and got soaked by waves not that I cared, it was great to watch him dart off ready to get bigger for next time he swims into my range! Caught him at my new(favourite) spot along West Coast Hwy. Caught on the Samaki Zing 7' 8-15lb rod, Rarenium 2500 with 20lb and Hide Shallow lure Thanks, Brent

Just googled them, at $35 a pop they'd bloody well want to be.
Anyone know if there's a metro store that stocks them or do I have to order online? Time to put some hurt on the bank balance I think.

Thanks Rocklobster. Just went to bluewater in morley & grabbed what I believe is the Shimano knock off, a world stage natural bait. Only cost $15 so if it works I'll be saving myself $20 a lure. If it doesn't my bank balance is gunna get hurt. Had to grab a couple of other bits of candy while I was there, couldn't help myself.

Doin it hard Leemo, no shortage of them around at the moment. Got a 54 this morning & lost one slightly smaller & that was with me having to pack it in by 8am. Same deal yesterday except I landed 2 over 50 & had two more get off after a couple of seconds.

The age of the fish depends
The age of the fish depends on its length. I read that tailor grow 170mm per year, so this one would be approx close to 4years old.
hope this is right fellas.

Ok pics back up, I was bloody
Ok pics back up, I was bloody proud of this one and it gets ya down thinking cheats are going to exploit it. This fish was probably 3 years in the hunt so you can understand I dont want to be robbed. Its more about sitting or flicking with me a couple of mates and having a beer without 20 blokes or chicks flicking over are lines than catching a good fish. We put in a lot of hours flicking to find a couple of reasonable spots and its a shame hard work can go to waste so easily. I feel as though I give as much advise to fellow anglers as I think is possible but judging by the popularity of a couple of spots we fish in the last 3 or 4 months I feel I should have just kept bloody quiet, haha.

'On ya mate. That's the spirit. As other have said, it's easy to ensure there's no geotag on, and then we still get to enjoy your catch :)
You've been kind enough to narrow is down to a 5km stretch of coast as it is - if people are seriously i'm sure they can make the effort and find it for themselves.

Yep, thats exactly what ive been doing.
Spending some time on nearmaps and google finding likely spots and then actually going there and checking them out.
I have found a few tailor in my exploration and it is an awesome feeling when I got on the end of a few knowing that I earnt them!

exploring
yup spot on! half the thrill of fishing is finding new spots rather than throwing a line in in the same old go to places. Nothing more rewarding than finding a new spot with a species of fish in mind and nailing it! the explore, the study, the hunt then the ultimate reward! no better feeling. last winter me and a mate started fishing on the north reefs with no real idea where to fish but we knew the fish were there. We both looked at google maps found a spot that could hold some big tailor. What do you know..... 5 fish well over 65cm and a whopping 79cm model in the first time we fished there. it was complete choas and one if the most satisfying fishing session ever (even if i did spend most of the night landing my mates fish of the cliffy reef). And yeah u might think u have the spot but technique, conditions, bait, lures it all adds up so u still gotta catch the fish even if u r at the right spot.
Killer fish mate well done, but surely this cant be the only 80cm reported. go get em guys!!! they wont be here for much longer

Yep good stuff Spook, I know
Yep good stuff Spook, I know exactly where your coming from. I've put in a lot of legwork along that stretch & have fished the entire length of that reef system (no doubt wherever you got that bad boy to). I've picked up a few nice spots along the way & I'd hate to show up one day to find one of those spots packed because I'd posted a photo or a mate had loose lips. Good to see the photo back up, it would be a deadset shame if you couldn't share such a great catch.

Is all you'll get from me.... Mind you it's no secret that reef systems in the metro area are where Tailor can be found. Sometimes you find an awesome spot and have a great session, then you head back 5 more times in the same conditions and get zilch. Conditions, timing and technique all have to be spot on in some places so it doesn't matter really.
Anyway Top Metro Tailor Dude, well done for releasing, I'm still tryin to crack my PB of 65cm (both released), mind you I have equalled it twice already this season...somewhere Metro.... ;)
TROLLS NOTE: Only 2 over 50cm can be kept. Tailor doesn't freeze very well so take a feed and let the rest go!
Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught!

Cheers fellas. The hunt is definitely 90% of the addiction but like you say, its lure choice, swell, clarity, tide and whatever else, then you have to land it without it throwing the hooks and ive had at 70% of fish throw hooks this year (barbless singles) until I changed back to a gang so getting a good one is effort and time. They must be around still so I hope to see a 90 from someone soon, that would be bloody cool!
