Topwater Day

I headed out from Carnarvon for a day of casting stickbaits and poppers, catch of the day was this 115cm GT.
He took three goes at the 200mm dumbell before hooking up and was landed on a Stella 18k, PE 6 and a 24kg Tcurve rod.
Half an hour later the popper dissappeared down the gob of a much larger GT and will never be seen again.

I also had some ASWB lures to test out, mackies love them. Landed 4 between 10 and 15 kgs and the lure only has some minor scratches and one chip of the paint. Very tuff bit of gear.

About 110 - 120 grams
from memory.
A bit light for there size but I can work them hard if the rod tip is kept close to the water.

Nice fish!
if you don't mind me asking, what depth was the gt caught in? Was there bait schooling on surface or was there reef around?
Heading up that general way soon and would love to get hooked by one!

Shallow reef
1 - 2m deep with a ledge dropping into 6m of water.
The GT's cruise the ledge and sometimes use the swell to chase bait onto the shallower reef. I didn't see much bait fish action in there but they are always around.
The mackies were feeding on bait balls 100 - 150m out from the ledge.

Any reef system
The islands, the reef to the north and some isolated coral lumps to the south. I've seen some monsters up along the Quobba coast but you would need near perfect conditions to target them from a boat.
