Re posting 'You are looking at a knob' Submitted by Marineboy on Sat, 2014-12-27 16.45 (http://fishwrecked.com/forum/you-are-looking-knob)
Geoff Kirk is my name and I am the owner and skipper of the Buffer Zone. There are 2 sides to every story. On Saturday I was fishing with my octogenarian father, visiting from Tweed Heads. Dad wanted to catch a Dhuie. We tried in close (38m) with no luck so we pushed out another 9 miles to some ground I was familiar with.
On arrival there was a boat in the vicinity, always seems to be the case. I have several marks in the area so we stopped and hovered over a spot about 500m from MARINEBOY as dad dropped a bait to the bottom. With no success we placed the boat and put the sea anchor over. After drifting for about 10 minutes I noticed that we were getting a little too close to the boat that was there before us, around 300m. We pulled the sea anchor and started to move to another mark when we noticed MARINEBOY bearing down on us. He stopped about 20m from us hurling abuse and yes he got plenty back.
At that point he started taking photos and told my father and me that we would be all over the net that day. A couple of points, I have been fishing from boats for over 50 years. I have never before been accused of dropping in on anybody. I agree with most of your forum users that ethics should be a big part of the test to get a skippers ticket and boat ramp ethics should be included as well. As for being some rich prick that has no idea how to act on the water, I started back in the 70’s with an 11”6” De Havilland car topper with a 6hp Johnno and through a lot of hard work in a family business I have progressed to what I have today.
MARINEBOY, at your age I think I had progressed to a Savage Snipe, 12’6” with a 15hp Suzuki, nothing as flash as what you are fishing out of, but I guess that you’ve chucked enough tantrums over the years that you get what you want when you want it. Mate I’m not hard to find, Geoff Kirk. Give me a call if you like, I’ll buy you a beer and we can both move on. By the way, no more correspondence will be entered from this end.

Great response Geoff and I guess a good lesson to think before you type.
We looked up a few times on Saturday and had people close....I just moved on to another spot, no great shakes.

That is a very good reply Swordfish, stated your case and did not get abusive, well done, hopefully you both get together and have a beer and a bit of a laugh over the issue, good to see some things can be sorted.
Thats what makes this a good site.
Barneyboy take Swordfish up on his offer of a beer, you never know you may even become good fishing mates and share some knowledge etc.
Cheers

busy time of year
sounds like Marineboy might have gone a bit OTT out there, its a very busy time of year with heaps of boats fishing close to each other (within 100M) particularly on the bank and out further, long que's at ramps etc = people getting stressed out.
Marineboy if you take Geoff up on his offer you will find he actually is a top bloke and a very dedicated fisherman, my advice is remove the original post, it doesnt prove anything or solve any problems and get back to enjoying your fishing

There is always a human side to these issues.
Its easier to form a very negative opinion when the other is faceless and nameless.
Have a beer and move on, life at sea has a habit of biting you on the ass later when broken down/in strife.

Geoff's Integrity
Ahh, always two sides to a story.
I can certainly vouch for Geoff's integrity. In the time I have known him, he is a guy of impecable character and a quality fisherman as well. I am sure he has more than enough spots with no need to ping anyone. Coincidence i'm sure.

Top response. As always there's two sides to every story. Good result.

Reply for geoff
Hi geoff
my name is Mark (marineboy on this site)
to start with I am probably a little older than you might think (52) and I have worked very hard to own my ocean whaler like you probably have to own your Boston whaler.
The post was regard to etiquette, and when a drift is east to west and someone drops their sea anchor to the west of you is that dropping in? Will let you guys work that out !
when we first got out there in the morning there was someone at a spot I had marked and was going to fish so we went half a km to the north of them and gave it a crack.
Its a massive ocean out there.
My spots are so secret even the fish don't know about them !

Hey guys
Meet up have a beer and a good laugh together, move on. Life is way to short to let the small stuff become a major issue.

I was there
Hi Guys
Just saw this thread, and I was out fishing with Mark(Marineboy) that morning.
We were happily drifting an area when Geoff turned up and proceeded to have a drift right in front of us, no more than 100m.
At this stage we weren't too worried, drifted to roughly where Geoff had pulled up then moved so we were on a different drift....all good.
Not long after we start that next drift Geoff starts making his way towards us, and we figure he will keep off our drift line this time...but no that's not the case.
He pulls up no more than 50m directly in front of our drift.
Mark yells out to "piss off"...to which we are told to "go get fucked"....nice one Geoff!!
We continue on with this drift for a bit, then decide to move locations completely.
We approach Geoff to inform him its poor form to setup a drift right on another boats line, to which we are greeted with more abuse.....ending with both parties departing the scene having vented and probably feeling pissed off.
All totally avoidable if we just show a bit of etiquette on the water to our fellow boaties.
Geoff it doesn't matter how long you have had a boat or been on the water, or how hard you work....all totally irrelevant info.
You did the wrong thing and if you cant see that you will probably keep doing it.
Anyway enough said.......I hope every one on here (including Geoff) has a Happy and Safe New Years and can get amongst a few good fish in 2015.
Cheers
Jimmy

all pretty unfortunate. Who
all pretty unfortunate.
Who knows what the outcome would have been if the contact had started off with
"its poor form to setup a drift right on another boats line"
rather than
"piss off"

Ha Ha funny.
Its funny how 2 storys can be so fifferent. Its amazing peoples perception of distance at sea. 500m is bloody long way looking accross the ocean. 300m is a bloody long way looking accross the ocean. 50m now that is close. Whos tellin the truth?

totally agree
people's perception of distance at sea can be very different.....I work offshore and even when we're stepped in close to another vessel or rig its pertty hard to communicate with just your voice.....fair but more engine and vent noise though...
Happy New Year!

Let it go
Its an unfortunate sign of the times that a squabble between two guys gets dragged into a public forum for all and sundry to comment and adjudicate on. The postings by the two involved are perhaps indicative as to why there was such a heated debate. Its the season for joy and forgiveness so give it up guys leave it out on the water and get back to enjoying fishing. Lets all work to make this forum one devoted to fishing rather unnecessary bitching.

WHAT'S PROBLEM?
Asshole behaviour should be outed IMO.
Getting sick and tired of people dropping in on drifts and spots whilst fishing now days - I don't recall it happening this much in the 'old days'.
And, YES, some footage would soon make the case either way...lol!!

And as rob pointed out, some manners would not go astray. what isn't in dispute is the fact that the first words out of marineboy mouth were "piss off". Real nice well mannered way to greet someone. could have been completely different if it had been handled differently.
If the general opinion is that Geoffrey has to work on his etiquette a bit, then it's definitely the case that marineboy needs to learn some manners.
