It was reported in the paper (the west I think) that the largest wheat producer in WA had sold all his land holdings, free hold to the Chinese.
This apparently has been provisionally approved by the Foreign Investment council.
I think it's time for all those who like weatbix to start buying up and stocking up now.
Most of us like to bitch about foreign countries gaining control over Australian turf to the detriment of Australian citizen (you can't go here you can't go there) or you are trespassing.
However in the past most of all the foreign control over vast tracts of the Australian continent have been via leases.
Now some bright spark has decided that the land should be sold to foreign investors "freehold"
I can see it coming now, you want to go to Coral Bay, Ha you must first of all get an entry visa, then make sure your passport is still valid, then be prepared for a full body scan at the border and you will not be permitted to catch one fish over half a meter.
A bad joke you say, Darwin harbour has been sold to a foreign power, just watch what changers will be made for those wanting to access this harbour in 5 years.
Do we (Australian government) enforce a financial loss on our citizens by restricting the sale of an asset to Australian interests only, or allow the sale of an asset on the world market and thus see the control of a strategic commodity (food rare metals etc) come under the direct control of a foregion country.
Who may not have the long term interests of Australia at heart. If we sell our (your) land free hold we have lost control of it forever.
What is the answer, I haven't a clue.
But we can't bleat about loosing our land to foreign investors then complain about not having foreign investment coming into the country.
That belong to people should never be sold off. The implications are frightening ..for short term gain long term pain. Look at your electricity for example. .. it's only gone up. . Percentage on top of percentage. We the people own the damn things not for the government who can change on a 3 year cycle to sell off and prop up their books to show "good financial governance".

Agree with the comments about the greens however....

The sixty four thousand dollar question is...
Do we (Australian government) enforce a financial loss on our citizens by restricting the sale of an asset to Australian interests only, or allow the sale of an asset on the world market and thus see the control of a strategic commodity (food rare metals etc) come under the direct control of a foregion country.
