Recommendations for a rod to suit a Saltist 6500 spin reel

Hi All

I am looking to buy a heavy spin outfit and have decided to give the Daiwa Saltist 6500 a go. I am looking at spending 200 - 300 0n a rod and was wondering if any one could provide me with some feedback on the following rods. I am trying to make it a multi purpose heavy spin out fit capable of casting, jigging etc. I know that this will mean its a comprimise but do not do enough of any one particular thing to buy a specialised outfit.

The below rods seem to be in the ball park.

Shimano T curve King Mac 2.13m 8 - 12 kg

Daiwa monster mesh 582xhs 5'8" PE 6 - 8

Live fibre rlf 6'6" 10 -15kg

Live fibre Texalium rlftx15 6'6" 10 - 15kg

Any comments would be appreciated.

Cheers

Pete

The rods you list are in a lot of ball parks, anything from 10-37kg?

The 6500 is way too big a reel for 10kg line, its really probably more for 60-80lb use.

If you work out what its for, then perhaps you might have a better idea which one to go for.

Ugly Stiks - Good Value!

Sat, 2010-08-28 19:22

Get yourself a couple of different Ugly Stiks and still have some money left over for some other gear!  I've never had any dramas with an Ugly Stick.  Personally I reckon some people spend too much on rods.  But each to their own hey.

i have the Shimano T Curve Bluewater Spin 15-24kg rod with my Saltists, a good popper casting combo and i can still use it for trolling and bottom bashing at a pinch

actually that is it there on my avatar picture, makes it easy to use having the centre console but if you have aall round shade then maybe a slightly shorter rod around 1.9m would suit. plenty of grunt mind you and i have it overloaded with 80lb braid and no problems at all.

I personally agree with till.

I personally agree with till. The rods you are looking at are way too light. This reel is nearly 900 grams with 15KG of Drag. I really like some of the Crystal Blues that Brody has down at the Fishing Shop; they are well priced for what they are. Even though they are Silstar they are fantastic rods - they never break. We have three of them one is rated "heavy" and we have that one on an Exceler DA 6500 (same reel as Saltist just different Gear Ratio) it is fantastic on that rod. Have a look at them.

The Lemax FerariStik EX702 is a good alrounder Pete.  The 7fter gives you a bit more length for casting but they're a solid rod with a lot of grunt for jigging.  I'd say the rod is underrated as far as line strength, I'd put it as a PE5 rod.

Let me know if you want more info.

Is a high gear ratio reel..same as the dogfight. If you want to use it from a boat, and lets face it, you will bottom fish with it, you need a lower ratio reel.

I have been using my dogfight as a bottom reel and its hard work..

Ask yourself what are you really going to use the reel for most. Retreiving lures or dragging up big lead. If its the latter go for a different reel. For arround the same price or less there are other reels.
