10-15kg outfit for chucking lures around?

Following on from an earlier post, im looking for a 10-15kg outfit as im heading to coral bay soon for the first time and only have my little bream rod and a big beach rod. going to be fishing from a dinghy mostly, and casting or trolling lures for hopefully some decent fish. can someone point me in the right direction?

budget wise was thinking $350 tops (is this wishful thinking?) and leaning towards spinning as ive never used overhead, but if theres good reasoning for O/Head id be keen to hear the argument. cheers

o/head for trolling, spin for casting. you can troll with a spin, but forget casting light lures with an overhead.

Your best bet is going into a decent tackle shop (i.e. not one that does camping too) and asking them what would suit. You should definitely be able to get a decent rod and reel for that budget. Though braid might bring you over a little.

If you go into a tackle shop they should be able to show you things which suit your budget and your fishing style and you'll be able to play around with them and get a feel for what you like. E.g. you could go a nice light graphite rod (up to 20lb) and say a 4000 sized reel which would be very good for chucking plastics/lures around/etc. Or you could go something a big bigger/tougher/more durable in which case there will be a fair few reels and rods available. The combo would certainly 'fill a gap' nicely in your outfits. Although an overhead would be best for trolling, it sounds like a spin outfit would do you better (can cast lures, but will work ok as a troller if you adjust your drag right and keep an eye on it).

Rod wise, something like the eupro twincraft would handle what you wanted and be a good all round rod. Certainly others out there. You can get a large selection of thin lure chucking graphite rods up to 10kg that can cast up to about 30g usually. Theres also thicker rods that arent quite as fragile that suit some people more though. Rods like the twincraft have a nice action if you're fishing on the bottom too (unlike some very nice casting rods). Reel wise, you could either go something like a 4000 size (daiwa and shimano do some around $200 which would fit the budget) or larger ones, saragosas/slammers/etc. Best to see what the tacklestores have and what you like. Try Oceanside, Bluewater, Campbells.
