Advice on PE4 Popping/Stickbait/Metals Outfit
Hey guys,
Just after some advice. Heading to Onslow for 7 full days of fishing with the boat in September. Im after a good PE4 casting outfit for medium GT's, Tuna, Mackies etc. The rod must be able to cast the second biggest size dumbbell poppers as I already have a few, as well as work medium sized stickbaits and spin metals upto 100g in case I head upto Steep/Quobba spinning off the rocks at some stage. Rod will be used out of the boat so cannot be longer than 7'6". Also the reel may also be mated up to a jig rod at some stage so nothing too fast.
Looking for advice on a outfit sub $1000 and something sub $1800. I already have 40lb Nitlon PE which I will be using.
Been considering a new 2010 model Saltiga 4500 which looks like the perfect size but after reading a comprehensive review, ive been slightly put off.
Love Stella SW's like the 10000 size but high gear ratio might make it a pain for jigging if/when I purchase a matching jig rod.
Looked on ebay at the JDM Stella 8000PG but no where near as cheap as what I can buy a 10000sw for.
Should I consider an older Saltiga 4500z or Catalina 4500 or a new Twinpower 10000SW?
Rods I like the look of are the Smith KGS-70MH and GTK74PG. Also the new Demon Bloods look the goods for the price.
Thanks for any advice, I know their are some tackle junkies on here that will have the perfect solution :)

Ocean Revolution by Smith,
Ocean Revolution by Smith, Stealth STK-76? I got mine from JDM Tackle and its a custom build with K guides. Another choice might be the Tenryu Spike, a few guys on the board have them.

saltiga 80tn
I use a saltiga 80tn for those sized poppers and stickbaits and heavier with a saltiga 6000. My missus used it just recently here in exmouth with her 2010 saltiga 5000 no dramas if not more balanced.
Nothing wrong with the 2010 range of reels ( I think someone got their hand in their shorts) but I also like the Stella 10000/8000 in the low gear ratio but being a land based Angler I get better casting distance off the saltiga spool maybe more wind knots but worth it.
Rod is 8' and I don't have a problem in boats both surface fishing or as a bottom bashing rig

Thanks for the input guys. I went and had a look at the Smith rods at Campbells and was very impressed. The new Saltigas are awesome as well - if a little on the expensive side compared to a Stella. Im now leaning more towards the Saltiga for size and weight. Anyone have any other suggestions?

i just got a yamaga blue
i just got a yamaga blue sniper 75/4, it is bloody awesome. Yamaga make the ripplefisher blanks, hand crafted in japan and very nice. perfect pe4 popping rod!
just one other question, why would you get a 10000 size sella for popping pe4? too big. my pe4 outfit i run a twinpower 6000SW with jeryy brown 40lb solid core. it is plenty,
sounds like your after a pe5-6 rod, the kgs is a 5 and is very different to a genuine pe4 rod. probably a better rod too for what you are talking about doing with it. pe 4 is really good for lures to 80g or so, anything else and you will need to beef up.

PilbaraBrad, I already have a
PilbaraBrad, I already have a 300m spool of Nitlon 40lb which I want to use on this new outfit. All 300 will fit on one of the new Saltigas no worries and I tried the reel on the GTK74PG today and it balanced perfectly. The rod is rated to PE5 but has quite a high cast weight of around 130 but in my hands it didnt feel too stiff and was reasonably tippy and light as hell. To me it felt like a good PE4 outfit which I could possibly run PE5 on in the future. I want it to be able to belt out a 80-100g metal slice fairly easily because I can see myself fishing Steep or Quobba at some stage as well. The 10000 Stella felt and looked only a smidgen bigger than the 4500 Saltiga.
Is your 6000 Twinpower the same body size as the 5000 or is it a little bigger? That would be a JDM model yeah?
Might go have a look online at the Yamaga Blue Sniper as well :)

Hey guys
I noticed some activity on my site from this post so I thought I'd chime in. The Tenryu Spike Tuna is a nice rod but you might want to check out the Tenryu Spike GT that I have as well. I love this rod for smaller poppers and it works great with stickbaits. I just used it in Fiji with a Stella 10K(PE5) and it was by far my favorite setup. I caught 3 GT's(20-25K) with it and numerous Red Bass and it performed very well. I was throwing mostly 80-120g stickbaits. Just my 2 cents.
Jono.s...thanks for the order by the way.

Definately have a look at the KGS74H this is a new model just released from smith, sounds like it would fit into what you are looking for. Personaly i would go a saltiga 2010 model over the SW stella, after fishing with both the saltiga has impressed me more but thats a debate im not willing to start.
Currently we have the smiths in stock and we can also order the Yamaga and Ripples in for you

Different series of rods, as
Different series of rods, as an alrounder the KGS would suit better due to having a different taper on the blank, the GTK74pg is a great rod but i find the action is to soft/light for an alrounder. Drop in and check out the KGS and decide for yourself
