reel advice for ugly stik
Submitted by ozmos on Sun, 2013-05-12 22:14
I've got a 9 foot BWS 1109 ugly stik and I'm looking to upgrade the reel. My dad's in Japan in the moment so I'm hoping he can get me something Japanese made a bit cheaper. I think the rod suits 17lb line but I'm not 100% sure as I'm not the original owner of the rod. If anyone owns something similar or knows about these rods please give me some advice. I'm looking to spend less than $200 on the reel and would prefer a spinning reel which I think the rod is made for. Cheers fellas (and ladies as the case may be).

I think you will find that's
I think you will find that's a BWS (Big Water Spin) 1100 90 - 2pce, 12-30lb line class, 1-4oz cast weight. Should be able to pick up a 5000 or 6000 Stradic in Japan for less than $200. Seeing as the rod is a bit on the weighty side I'd probably go with the 6000.
Personally though I'd probably look at upgrading both the rod & the reel. I don't think it would be very hard to come up with a good rod & reel in Japan for $200 if you stick with Shimano or Daiwa gear & most of thier stuff is pretty good quality.

Sure do. I've got 9 of them
Sure do. I've got 9 of them all up & have never had any issues at all. A pleasure to use with a well proven track record & a good price there's no need to look any further.

stradics
there is nothing better for $200 in my opinion either, i'd go the 8000 Fj myself for that rod.
cheers

one piece
Thanks for the feedback guys, the rod's a one piece but I'm guessing its designed for a similar reel to the 2 piece. Might be asking a bit too much for the old man to bring back a rod and reel for me on the plane. He'll already be loaded up with big bottles of sake. I'll have a look at the Stradics online.
