Stella 20000 or a Saltiga

Mon, 2013-06-10 15:21

Stella 20000 or a Saltiga 7000 are huge reels. IMO overkill unless you are into chasing big GTs etc. I have a Stella 10000 and even though I do love it it is hardly used now with SW fishing. I would use it to jig for sambos only in the southwest because smaller lighter reels would slay almost anything down here.

My (Late) Stella 8000 was even to big for most Karratha and dampier fishing (claimed overboard by a stupid fisherman and a large shark who decided to fight again whilst I was trying to cut the line to the hook - ouch braid through fingers burn). Was going to try GT popping so got the 10000 but times have changed.

I would be happy as larry SW fishing with a 4000-5000 Stella and suspect it would concur most fish down here, but just my opinion.

Neels is on the money, they are a massive reel and a 5000 with braid would probably do it otherwise a 10000 with mono. i couldn't see myself owning anything bigger than my Twinpower 4000 if i was down south.

ballooning off a 5000 seems a bit optimistic guys?

In any case I'd have thought you are better off balooning with an overhead and getting a suitable size Stella for casting (but suitable size being smaller than 20,000 unless you are doing very heavy or very deep jigging)

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Have to agree with this, Not

Have to agree with this,

Not too sure how much ballooning has been done with a Shimano 4000 or 5000 size.  but I wouldn't like to have a decent amount of line ballooned out then hook onto a reasonable size BFT.  (I assume you are chasing stuff like BFT?) I Honestly just don't think it could hold anywhere near enough line.

If you are just bottom bouncing or jigging the 5000 will be great as stated above.

Ballooning ......go big !

comes down to line capacity as others have said

Tue, 2013-06-11 14:06

for what its worth, ive got a dogfight and a 10000

stella is much smoother imo

but others will say the opposite

just like the old holden v ford argument

I think I missed the balloning bit

Tue, 2013-06-11 14:48

But as Dkonig said OH better for this. The only difference realy between a Stella10K and 20K is line capacity and size, with similar drags etc.

Spinning with a 20K would exhaust you quickly, and unless GT poppering is hardly worth it IMO.

But between the 2 reels mentioned if thats what you want I am a Stella man, although the Diawa is not far behind.

Stella 30000

Tue, 2013-06-11 18:10

If you are going for the biggest, why not wait for the sw30000. That's gonna be one humongous reel:) I can't wait to see one in real life.

cheers.

 I think you'll find the 30K

Tue, 2013-06-11 20:36

I think you'll find the 30K has the same body as the 20K and just has a different spool.

ballooning

Wed, 2013-06-12 15:27

I balloon with my 20000 stella holds 600m of good PE6 then 200m of 50lb mono topshot and a 6m 100lb wind on with no problems..

Overheads are better but this certainly works..

If you like shit jerky drags buy a saltiga, i personally wouldnt use one for a sinker i hate them that much... There rods on the other hand are beautiful..

(holden vs ford arguement as stated before)
