Reel information required

Hi guys and girls. Hoping you may be able to help.
I know it is probably a question you have discussed countless times, but your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
After cutting back my fishing activity for the past 15 odd years to raise my two daughters on my own, I am now able to get back into my other love, fishing.
While, I have been able to keep my hand in with a very occassional fish using pretty much the same gear I has 20 years ago, it really seems that fishing technology and ideas have really passed me by.
Since I signed up to this great site a few weeks ago I have read the various posts and comments on tackle and technics and it has left my mind awash with fantastic information and great images of where I want to take my fishing to.
The stories I have read about plastics, using braid and other items which are now common place but were never heard of when I was regular angler are just mind boggling.
Unfortunately I now have information overload.
One of the most obvious observations I have made is that I seriously need to upgrade my gear if I want to attempt the level of landbased fishing I would like to reach.
While I am reasonably ok for the moment with the rods I have, I desparately need to find a new spinning reel. My 25 year old Shimano has seen better days, and my newer threadlines just won't hack it if I manage to hook something decent.
I have read about Stradics, Stellas, Sustains, Spinfishers, SOLs, etc and they all sound fantastic.
I am looking to buy myself a new spinning reel for Xmas to fish from rocks, Groynes, beaches etc. for mulloway, tailor, etc.
I fish reasonably light - 15 kg line maximum mostly.
Unfortunatley my budget will only be between $300 and $400 (still putting my daughters through Uni and High School).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thats great mate! If you are
Thats great mate! If you are only chancing mullas and tailor IMO i wouldnt spend $400 on a reel. My factores include:
You want something light so you can use it all day,
Reels in the 6000 size class is proberly best,
There are so many on the market today that a choice is hard as they all have good points,
This is what i would look at but id go into a tackle store (good one!) and ask them,
For this type of fishing i use a Penn applause 6000 with 20lb braid on a 9 foot starlo stick rod. The whole combo retails for under $300 and i dont see the need for something more expensive. If you plan on chasing bigger fish well then maybe id up grade to something like a stradic or simular. Stellas and the like arnt worth buying for this type of fishing as sand and grit around you will only stuff the expensive reel you just brought.
Id go down to your tackle store and have a look at what they sujest and then put it up on the site for sujestions then we all can tell you yes or no. Where are you located and ill tell you a good shopt ot go too?
Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

combo!
gday colin, as spess said theres no need to spend the big $$ on a beach combo, its only gonna get sand/grit and saltwater in it...even though u wash it ofcourse!
value for money for the beach would have to the spheros range! if your looking to run 15kg then prob go the 12 or 14000 size as noworries has stated, but if u did want to go lighter then the spheros 8000 retails around the $150 mark would be perfect also.
don't forget the baitrunner range in the 4500 and 6500 size, these arent bad for mulloway if u just want to stick your rod in the holder n click the baitrunner on and sit back n wait.
unless you want to spend a lil extra (around the $300) for reels made for surf casting eg. Daiwa Emblem Pro 5500 or the Daiwa Entoh. both built with a long cast spool so u can cast ur baits out that lil further and a higher gear ratio incase u wanna cast metals around.
rod wise, there is a huge range of them, starlo sticks, ugly sticks, ozflex, synder glass to name a few! but the best bet would be to choose the reel u like and go into ur local tackle shop and match it to a good stick!
hope this helps mate!
cheers

RE: Reel information needed
Thanks Spess, No Worries and Sam. I guess what I am after is one reel that has the flexibility to fish from the cliffs and reefs up Kalbarri way, but is not too big to fish for mulloway, snapper and tailor from the groynes and beaches down this way. The Penn, the tss4 and Daiwas sound good. I have a small Penn that works well, but is really a bream reel. I generally fish from beaches and rocks with my newer 10ft or 12 ft Shimano rods, or my 8 ft custom butterworth I picked up at a hock shop years ago.
Spess, I live in Mirrabooka and work in Mt Hawthorn.
Thanks for your help, Colin Hay

Mirrabooka id go and see Sam
Mirrabooka id go and see Sam at the tackle shack in malaga or head up to Gotone in woodvale and as for Matt. Or Chambells in the city. But Woodvale would be my choice a they will have everything you need and they are good blokes.

I have a shimano 4500
I have a shimano 4500 Baitcaster thats over 10 yrs now.
I get my bait out just as far as my mates with Penns and 2 1/2 foot longer surf rods and still have no problem in reefing in 6kg Samon.
Though will be treating myself to a shinny new one after chrissy
Great for beach fishing as mentioned. Set up a chair, sit down, Sink beers, chat and wait for the zzzzzZZZZZZZZZ, WooHoo.

the ducks
We've always sold the traditional Baitrunner series (and i use) but we have been asked alot about the long cast model a fair bit so i've just received them. From all reports they seem to be the ducks for all aspects of boat or L/B fishing!

RE: Reel Infortmation required
Many thanks for the info Ryan and Neander. I think I will go for the long cast. From what I have read Spess, the main difference between the baitrunner and the long cast is the spool shape.
I quite fancy being able to cast out into a deep gutter with a slab of tailor or a mullet and sitting bait and wiating for a mulla to grab it.
Thanks again all for your input, tight lines, Colin Hay

Hi Ryan, Do you have the big baitrunner long cast in stock, or are you planning to get it in some time in the future? Regards Colin Hay

differences!
Yo Spess,
The Shimano Big Baitrunner longcast has a slightly higher gear ratio, full ali body versus graphite, long cast spool versus standard and holds more line etc
Yeh Colin, just unpacking our Shimano order and yeh we have them here mate!
