reel service

Hi all , i was recently told that when you buy a reel it is best to service the reel before use .

By this it was suggested that in the tackle shops , or straight from production the reels spin freely as there is no oil in the gear box .

So should i be filling up my little twin power with oil or wait till its done some work for the annual?

 cheers kyle

I'd leave it as is, as they are ready to go out of the box. Get it serviced after a while of use and in the meantime rinse it with fresh water and Tackle Guard it after every use.

Mate most reels don't come

Sat, 2011-06-25 16:09

Mate most reels don't come with enough lube on bearings or or working parts to prevent corrosion, preservicing is essential in this regard, I'm also not a big fan of the oils and greases used by the big companies and will totally clean and degrease all parts and relube with what I like to use. If your of the opinion is that you fill up the gear case with oil I'd strongly suggest taking it to a tackle store who services. A Twinpowers a fair investment so I'd recommend it.

Cheers, Daisy

I used a brand new Daiwa

Fri, 2011-07-29 13:09

I used a brand new Daiwa Exceler Plus 4000 for spinning off the beach down south for a couple of days. After about 200 casts and only a few small fish, it became 'grindy', like the gears had no lube. It would occasionally jam if retriving really slowly. I thought the reel was knackered.

When I got home, I took it apart and it had minimal lube on the gears. After a re-lube, it was as smooth as ever and has done loads more work since without a problem. The gears were fine, by the way.

Hence, when I got my Capricorn J, it was serviced before the first use...

Cheers
