Removing a Sikaflexed in Transducer - Miracle Spray!
Righto, finally got the energy to pull out the 50kHz SS264 transducer I put in 3 years ago to test the 200 kHz transducer I had sitting on the bench for the past 3 years (long story but the 600 W 200 kHz transducer already on the boat worked well so I never bothered).
Plan was to pull out the 50, replace with the 200, if the SS264 200 kHz was better than the old 600W 200 KHz, I would pull that out and put the 50 back in so I have 1 kW 50 and 200. Phew.....
Anyhooo.....I remember I used a HEAP of Sikaflex when I put the tranny in 3 years ago, and man, it is like concrete! No chance of getting it out without a jackhammer.
On the net, guys have used a product called Debond Marine Formula, that apparently softens and breaks down Sikaflex. Worth a crack. Found it at All Marine Services in Hammmy Hill thanks to the guys at Debond O/S.
After trying to remove the easiest bit, rubber gasket, with no luck, I sprayed on this stuff, left it for 5 minutes, and with only a bit of effort it comes off. This stuff WORKS!
Anyhow, 2 hours of scoring and spraying and out comes the tranny with no damage. Happy days.
Highly recommended product, this job would have been near impossible without damging the boat or tranny otherwise.
Putting the 200 kHz in tonite. Less Sikaflex this time!

Man that hull is thick John. I have the collar on mine and still got way more thread showing than that.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

That's really good news to hear about something that will break up sikaflex, thanks for sharing. I've sikaflexed the occassional hardware to my hull, and it does a great job of keeping there, but bloody hell, it's hard work to get it off (as you know) if you have to.

Thoughts...
Be interested to see what you think of the 1kw SS264 as compared to the 600w. It is obviously very sensitive...but a 6 degree beam is very narrow. I have always wondered how good it would be in the real world when the boat rolls around a bit. That narrow beam would be all over the place. Cheers

West Coast Agree, that is

Agree, that is one of the reasons I never changed over, but I have just installed a medium band chirp (80-160 kHz) tranny running 13-20 degrees which gives me better coverage than the 600W 200 kHz and more detail, so the SS264 200kHz Narrow will be very useful as it will allow my to pinpoint fish directly below the boat.

Ta
I currently run a suzuki sounder with a P66 transom mount. It is a 200hz single frequency. Max 600w transducer. Not a bad unit, but i find it struggles in a bit of chop and once you get over about 40m. I could go a through hull 600w to see if that improves things, but thinking I wouldn't mind a dual frequency with the ss264 pairs. Just hesitant at this stage as I already think the P66 (12 degree) struggles in chop.
