replacing guides on my old abu garcia boat rod

I've been given an old abu garcia overhead boat rod (198cm jig stick) and also an old penn overhead reel (penn longbeach No68). Iv'e pulled the reel apart and cleaned it up so it works sweet now. The rod has a missing guide and a few bent ones so i'm thinking of doing a diy job and replacing them for new ones. Does anyone know where i can buy good guides or a kit for redoing the guides? iv'e looked on youtube at how to replace them so iv'e got a basic idea of how to do it, just need the gear to do the job now. Any tips, website links, useful help or info would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Mate I've been doing the same

Mate I've been doing the same thing myself with some pretty good success as we speak. I've tried a number of guides and all have worked well. It comes down to cost and a little bit of personal taste as to what guide style you like.

For overhead rods I like the Fuji MN style frames but have found a cheaper source for that style that does the job nicely.

PM me for details as I'm unsure whether I can post a link here as there may be site sponsors that sell rod building gear. I don't know but don't want to upset anyone.

Do you also need other bits of kit like thread for binding etc? I can help there too.

Cheers for the reply Bunny,

I ended up getting some guides off ebay last night, all i need now is the thread and some epoxy. what brand of epoxy/glue have you been using to seal the binding thread? I'm hoping to use a quick-dry type because apparently the slow dry type will drip unless the rod is spun around for hours on end. do you know of anywhere in Perth to get the thread and epoxy from? I'm hoping to find the same yellow/green threads to keep it looking original but if i cant find them i might go with blue/black.

i went to my local tackle shop yesterday for some info or maybe a rebuilding kit to do the job and they pretty much told me i should just throw my rod in the bin because it's old. I enjoy fixing things though and the rod and reel has been in my family for over 20 years now (given to me by my dad) so i'm keen to hang onto it.

If there's any site sponsors that would like to point me in the right direction for buying threads/epoxy feel free, I do prefer to shop locally whenever possible
