Rescue off Mandurah today - dumb people?
Submitted by Swompa on Tue, 2016-12-27 12:14
Seems a few people forgot how to play boats this weekend.
Before I get stuck into the three today, condolonces to the family of the bloke who got hit by his own boat at Rotto yesterday.
What sort of dumb arse would go out to James service reef today? Punching into 30's and a bit of swell to make it more entertaining.
Clearly they didn't take the rite precorshuns or however that bloke spelt it. It's people like that who get marinas/ramps shut when the wind is up.

Bloody hell, what drugs are these journo's on. You have got to wonder where they get their degrees from being so out of touch. Back to the story though, have just read these were seasoned older fellas. How the hell do they lose their senses and venture out in this crap.

I don't think crays are worth risking your life for
They don't taste that good that I would put my life at risk for a feed of them.

Turns out I know the skipper and the rescuer...
Skipper has tens if not hundreds of thousands of miles behind him and should have known better.

Just seen the article then, a couple of hundred years experience between them. Must have a few screws loose to even think about going out this morning.
Interesting couple of days on the ocean, someone's $250k boat ended up on the rocks yesterday morning too.

Manduray was only blowing
Manduray was only blowing 12 knots at 11am compared to 22 knots at cockburn going of baywind.
I went out from cockburn today...inside the breakwater at austal ships to do a few checks on the motor, even that was choppy!! was suprised to see 4 other trailers in the car park.
The accident on Monday is sad, im sure we all have the tab offset on our legs so to not have a run away boat in the case of going over board, this is what the kill switch rist band is for......i never wear mine for some reason. With two blokes onboard and this still to happen is a mistery, would be good to know how it eventuated.

That is the stupid thing
That is the stupid thing about the weather reading at Mandurah, it is at the sailing club which is in the lee of Halls Head. Go out 300m and you are exposed to anything from the south.

Time for my rant on this issue
As a volunteer with marine rescue it astounds me that people will go out in that weather just to get a couple of crayfish. I was on duty the Sunday before Xmas and it was blowing 25-30 knots of Hillarys and yet people were still going out to check craypots. I saw boats less than 5mtrs in length going out.
Is it really worth it and also putting the lives of volunteers at risk as well. I am happy to assist someone who breaks down or gets into trouble when conditions are OK but when people deliberately go out in rough weather it pisses me of no end. OK sometime the weather forecasters get it wrong but when you get down to the marina or out the heads and see the conditions have changed for the worse think about it before heading out.
Also they should be thinking about thier families. These idiots of Mandurah were just lucky they had access to a mobile or the police would have been pulling 3 bodies out of the water.
Did they log on with Mandurah, I doubt it because "they have all the experience in the world and it will never happen to them".
That's my 2 cent worth on the subject.
Have a great New Year and stay safe on the water

Old Saying
There is an old saying that best describes those who go out in weather that keeps most of us onshore
"Its only the needy or the greedy who venture out in times of doubt"

YACHT
Yacht actually stands for Yet Another C%^t Having Trouble and without them most northern sea rescue groups wouldn't have anything to do

Last time you rattled that
Last time you rattled that crap I think I asked if you had the number of yachts vs motor powered boats rescued in a year. Do you happen to have the numbers?
Randall - you probably know one of the guys from mandurah....
