Rigging up Witch Doctor / Dillfish teaser
Submitted by BigClarky on Mon, 2012-05-28 11:02
Hey Lads,
Wanted to see how everyone riggs up their Witch Doctors / Dillfish teasers when trolling.
Over the years I have just used a simple rope setup, but noticed some of the boys are running a small Barrell D-Shackle or Snap Barrel Swivel to the teaser to get correct action , then heavy duty rope of that. Also seen some people running 500 pound leader line to hook up there witch doctors and dillfish teasers.
Your advice and experiences would be appreciated.

I wouldnt run rope direct to
I wouldnt run rope direct to the teaser. Not because of action, but because the constant wobbling motion will eventually wear away the rope and you'll loose your teaser, doh!
At the teaser itself, it may make sense to have a length of strong multistrand wire seeing as some teaser have been attacked by sharks...
Also, consider the line strength. Strong line means if a shark hits it and latches on and slows down the boat (happened to someone on here) you wont lose the teaser. However, If you've got 500kg cable then your bollard/attachment point/etc is going to fail before your teaser. Better loosing the teaser than damaging the boat.
Have seen some people use nylon coated wire, but also VB cord. I'm not sure whether a stretchy or non-stretchy line is best. I'll leave it to others to suggest the 'right' line, but a good idea is to get a large handline to wind the excess line back on when you're finished. Also, if you're ripping the teaser onto the deck after a hookup, some lines will tangle easily and some wont.

Just put it on a big hand reel, easier to store then and works good.
Cheers

Most guys including charter
Most guys including charter ops using teasers in the North for Sails and Marlin ... use ski rope for the teaser line. Its much better on the hands to retrieve quickly and doesnt tangle easily either. The teasers them selves are set on heavy wire , not for sharks ... but for the Mackies. Ive never seen any probs with this.
