Rope caught in horizontal winch
Submitted by Roza88 on Thu, 2020-09-24 10:58
I used recommended 3 strand 12mm nylon and each and every time I use the winch it gets jammed as picture shows. Has anyone had this issue or found a solution other then going all chain as it's extremely expensive and would like to keep weight down

Winch rope - try fabric softener
Is it getting jammed near where it joins the chain, can't really see? Maybe try soaking the rope in fabric softener overnight, or try eight strand plaited anchor rope.

Distortion in picture makes it hard to tell
Not your fault, site seems to be distorting some posted pics recently. Appears to be some damage on the gypsy teeth from the picture? Is it on intial deployment, or retrieval? I had a horizontal gyspy winch for a while, but I used 12mm 8-strand plaited. Even with that, you could get problems first time you tried to drop unless you remembered to put the hose in there for a minute before you left home, if the rope had dried out. 3-strand nylon is really the bare minimum for these, everyone who goes for the cheaper ( and easier to splice ) 3 strand nylon with these eventually reports problems. The fabric softener is a good idea, you need to keep the rope really supple.

If you click on one of the distorted pics it will open a normal version of it.

Never used an anchor winch
Never used an anchor winch before but it looks like the teeth are just digging and ruining the lay of the rope and stopping it passing thru easily? sounds like the rope recommendations mentioned are worth are a go.

Its usually the yoke that
Its usually the yoke that guides the rope off the Gypsy that causes this issue.
