Anyone been on this convoy, I'd like too, but they say you have to do 15 knots, my boat won't do that, its either 10 or 21, no in between. How did you get on?

Is that the one through freo sea rescue... I want to do the same Ian(btw I got a 18'6 chivers now) but mine is waiting for a honest marine mech to come fix it without emptying my bank account... I think the 15kn is a minimum speed so ya might get lucky on the day and everyone can happily sit on 21 knots.. let us know how it is if ya do it!!

Old hand
I have been on it several times. The main issue is that no one manages a constant speed and it varies from 5kn to 20kn at any time. It is well worht the money though and I recommend it to anyone who intends to visit Rotto in their own boat but who hasn't yet. I will be on the next one which is on the 31st March and will absolutely be looking forward to it.

How can your boat not do an in between speed? I admit in my boat it took me a couple of times out to be able to pick a speed and hold it. Do you adjust your trim accordingly to conditions?
I also haven't done the convoy and would like to. But not sure if I can being my boat is only 5.2m

The boat goes on the plane
The boat goes on the plane real easy, no change in atitude, just a slight increasing RPM (with out touching the throttle) and the next thing we're off. If you back the throttle off a little it bogs in and we're back to 5 knots.

Sounds like you need to look
Sounds like you need to look at your prop and whether it suits your hull type.
Had a similar issue with my Northshore/etec combo, a stern lifting prop usually helps.

Too many boats
The BIA convoys takes too many boat and not everyone can maintain that speed.
When we do the convoy (Whitfords Sea rescue) we limit how many go and only go as fast as the slowest boat can go given the conditions on the day.
We are planning another one in the next month. Will post details when available

Yup - I would agree with Iceman - did it a few years ago and it was good for getting an idea but to many boats IMO
Iceman is the Whitfords mission an overnighter as well?

Overnight - no
no is not overnight, but we still do most of the bays on the north side and a couple on the south side.
Cost is lot less, I think it is around $60 per boat

Sounds great might give it look always worth having a refresher - presumably you can just not return with the group and stay over if conditions allow

Length
I think the BIA length limit is 5.0m whereas the Whitfords is no lower than 5.5m. Correct me if I am wrong, Iceman. I agree that the BIA one can have to many boats although we did the November 2010 convoy and the number was manageable. It certainly made it for a good quiz night that's for sure!!!

What exactly do they cover
What exactly do they cover ??
Never thought to do it, just pointed the boat in the right direction and kept an eye on the nav screen.
Is it more to do with access around the different bays etc once you get there ?

Everything
They cover everything from access to a number of the bays both north and south and on the Sunday, they cover the safety aspects of boating including the operation of flares. As I said, the quiz night is a lot of fun and well worth the money for the whole weekend.

never done the rotto run
never done the rotto run when we had a boat, but it sounds like a great day out.
when we get our next tub will probably do it. would be an interesting experience and to learn about all the bays around rotto could come in handy but sounds like the one whitfords does would be a whole lot better with less boats

When's the next?
Does anyone know when the next Rotto convoy is organised by the BIAWA?
Iceman, is Whitfords doing another convoy this year or has it been canned?

I had a fantastic time when I went on one.
I totally agree with the comments about numbers of boats and greatly variable speeds being a bit of a pain or being at the back of the convoy at full stop in one of the narrow channels.
I am sure the Whitfords Sea Rescue experience would also be a very good one.
Cheers

Escape,
I think you were on the one I did back in March last year. I had a Douglass Craft then and I think you followed me from Hillarys.
I intend going on the November one, you going?

Hi David Yes I did that
Hi David
Yes I did that convoy in my old dearly departed Penguin 32. I still remember the headache from such a good night.
Not sure about the convoy this time as much as I enjoyed it. I get across to rotto a bit more often now thanks to what I learnt ( and the new boat)and cannot wait for the longer evenings and heading across after work on a Friday .
.....the more I think about it the more I am tempted though. We'll see.
Regards
Evan
