Rotto Moorings

Hi guys

Going to Rotto in March for a mini break.

Been over there for many years younger than I am now, and having lived in Mandurah and for the last 6yrs Karratha havent been over to Rotto in my boat for years ++. Also have lost/sold the mooring(s) we had at narrow neck and geordie.

Question is can you hire moorings or are they still all private. If not where and how do you "Park" the boat. Is the "lanes" to the Bathurst side off the jetty still there where you can tie off, can you still pull up and stay at the pub jetty.

Or what other options are there.

Hoping for some help.

Neels

You can stern anchor to beach

Mon, 2014-01-20 14:16

You can stern anchor to beach pretty much anywhere except the swimming areas.
Moorings you can hire, depending on the boat size though stern to beach is free and best by far if your smaller. Outside the pub is stern anchor points also, drop your bow anchor and stern into beach and tie to the cable.
Have a look at the pics I posted a few weeks back here.
See Rotto boating guide also but its pretty complex.
Note-take PLENTY of rope for your stern anchor especially if staying onboard so you can pull away from the beach rather than end up dry.
40 meters plus your anchor is a good start.

For the life off me could remember your name as I knew there was a post with photos and kids having fun.

5.4m Trailcraft, so stern anchor very possible. Not staying onboard (Mrs booked the lodge)

Hows security if you leave the boat unattended. Would you strip it bare off non fixed items or would it be OK. I have some pretty $$ items onboard like top notch life jackets etc etc.

There were boats on either

Mon, 2014-01-20 14:47

There were boats on either side, got to know all them coming and going-all walks of life and had no qualms about any of them keeping an eye out though I did put a tiny padlock on the cabin when we left it for a day to go round the island-this was to keep the honest people out!

If leaving overnight maybe remove the easy stuff like sounder and keys but I didn't meet anyone who looked sus, and all the boatys kept an eye on each others stuff and were ultra helpful.
Of course if something got knocked off insurance mightn't like it to be in full view.

If there was space around you and your a bit wary Id spin the boat bow in so no-one can see in for overnight, we do this all the time at the Abrolhos (to keep out the wind!)by anchoring bow in then slackening both ropes then carrying a loop from stern to bow and bow to stern to reverse boat and vice versa. Don't need to reset anchors just tighten up.
Not sure if this is allowed though at Rotto.
Thompson Bay is 100% sheltered from the southerly, barely notice it.

Moorings

Mon, 2014-01-20 14:25

Hey,

You can still hire moorings but unless you are in early you can be hard pressed. Jump on their website and have a look.

I am on the shared mooring system but find the system so useless and restricting that for the $50 per day or so I just hire a bouy or a jetty mooring.

I believe there is a spot that you can tie off up against the beach but the numbers are limited and you have to be in quick to get one.

You can book the pub jetty as well if your boat will fit.

Should be OK, booking is midweek 12-15th March so hopefully not so busy.

Changing work locations so having a week off between jobs.

Cheers and see security question on Rob's reply.

Hey JD, I got there on new

Mon, 2014-01-20 14:33

Hey JD, I got there on new years day which Id have thought would be amongst the busiest days and was able to get a stern mooring on the beach each day over 4 days in front of the pub.
Other than the closed swimming and "authorized users" area on Thompson Bay, you can stern up to beach anywhere for free.

Crasney-here you can download everything you and your lawyer need to know :-)

Hi Cransy

I used the Thompson bay beach mooring system when I stayed over there in November and it worked really well, The tide is a bit bigger over there but you wont have a problem with your boat just trim your motor up, my 5.7 was fine.  Just make sure you have 2 anchors one for bow and one for stern because if the beach mooring area is full you wont have any tie off loops that are anchored on the beach and you will need to use a stern anchor of your own.  For ropes I took 2 pieces of 25m but in reality 2x 15m would have been plenty and you will need some bollards/cushions for the side to protect yours and the boats either side of you.  Its times like these that an electric winch is a bonus (coming shortly) makes beach anchoring almost a 1 person job

as far as security goes I locked most of my stuff (sounder, tackle) in my seat storage and took my more expensive rods to my accomodation with me.  I left dive gear on the boat and all was good but it wasnt that busy then.

I am going again in Feb but this time I have booked a beach pen near bathurst point which is essentially the same thing but you dont need to worry about getting a spot at the end of the day, it is a bit of a rip off but I will just be with the mrs so it will make my life a bit easier having an organised spot and not having a barney with her about how to anchor the boat lol.  This time I will take a trolly with for ferrying stuff too and from the boat and just use a bike lock for it when I am on the water, its hard to ride a bike with 6 rods and an esky

have a good trip, any q's pm me

Bathurst beach pens

Are the go when it is busy that way you always have a spot for your boat after a day out its a ripoff at 30 bucks a night was there over christmas and the nearest toilet ans shower block was closed so they dont give a shit about boaties. if you beach anchor its luck of the draw if you go out another boat can take that spot.
