rowers rescued

What a pair of clowns. Supposedly trying to row to Mauritius from Geraldton.
"The rowers made it 18 nautical miles offshore ... before using a satellite phone to call sea rescue".
Suspect Carnarvonite might have strong feelings about their insurance arrangements (?)

If we didn't have
If people didn't have a go, or have a sense of adventure we all would still think the world was flat.
It can cause a bit of inconvenience for sure at times it can be hazardous to the rescuers and a real pain in the butt, however we need people like this to come out of their comfort zone and extend themselves to show us all that there are adventurous people still alive.
The way kids are being brought up and schooled is that they are all wrapped in cotton wool and must not stray from the heard concept.
Don't run, you might fall over, don't climb the tree you might fall out of it and break you arm or leg,
don't play any contact sports at school or one of the kids my get Dad to sue you for frightening behaviour.
Etc etc etc.
Don't make a noise when playing games, better still don't play any games you might loose now what would that do to your self esteem. You could end up emotional damaged for life.
Hell and what ever you do don't let kids see you kill (sorry dispatch a fish or animal) least you turn them into meat eating dangerous homo sapiens. Then where will we be.
Rant over I've had a bad day, the water pump on the Nissan crapped it's self.

If it was a 100 people rowing
If it was a 100 people rowing a huge viking boat id be more approving but you wonder if these blokes would do it if they had to sign a contract saying they will pay for the rescue or even forfeit a rescue.

Crayboat
Crayboat towed them in from out near North Island, so a little more than 18nm, more like 70nm.
One thing in their favour is that they decided early to give up and not try to battle on for a while and see if they could still do it making a rescue more difficult and expensive to all involved.
Bit sceptical on the gear that broke after one and a half days at sea though, GPS and autopilot kaput.
Good on them for having the courage for stepping outside their comfort zone and trying something most of us would shy away from but preparation is the key word.
Makes me think of the joke [in bad taste ]about what one would do if an epileptic was having a fit in a bath full of water=======be quick and throw your washing and some soap powder in.

Not Again
So how many people have tried this and had to be rescued. I am so sick and tired of people wanting to go outside thier "comfort" zone with no thought of those who would have to come to their aid if something went wrong.
Last year I had to go out on the water police boat in 60 knot winds because a yachty decided it would be a good idea to sail from Rockingham to Xmas Island during the storm. Lost his mast and both engines Water Police needed us to assist with local knowledge as vessel ended up near alkimos.
If people want to go outside their comfort zone jump out of plane. A least its a short trip

Your sounding a little jaded
Your sounding a little jaded there Iceman-a common theme amongst "first responders".
Due to only getting to see the failures and not the successes of both everyday and unusual endeavours.
Sometimes people need to be saved from themselves, and luckily we live in a society where the means to do that is provided.
Alternative is say Indo, where hundreds drown and theyre luckily if a dugout canoe pops out.
Know which i prefer...

what I cant understand (If
what I cant understand (If I'm reading the info right) is: why didn't they just turn around and row back.
Quote :"The main issue is that one of the guidance pieces of equipment, which is a vital piece for the world record attempt, failed."
they were not sinking .....hurt etc. surely they could navigate back to where they came from 24 hrs b4????
to their credit though
Quote: "We have to categorically state that the challenge team paid for this charter boat to pull them back, it was not a sea rescue and it was not on the taxpayers' money,"
Iceman: understand where you are coming from and of course the effort you guys put in but to be the devils advocate here. doesn't every boater go out of their "comfort zone" numerous times in their boating life. first solo fishing mission. first night out ....first deep drop. first time to monties etc etc. Of course we all like to think we take the necessary precautions in preparation etc but where do you draw the line when it comes to preparation, experience and adventure.

( 'they got 18 nm offshore and called sea rescue')
I put this in inverted commas as it was a verbatim quote reporting what happened.
Seems that that report wasn't quite right and different reports have emerged since i posted.
That doesn't make me a clown in my book. I do ok for myself actually.
Good luck to them if they are helping and not imposting on others.

Wrong way round
The search for the dead man's wife was called off a couple of days back, not for him as his body was found down an old mine shaft.
Wasn't just Tony Bullimore when they went down south, there was the Frenchman who's yacht had also gone over and he was on the upturned hull some 50 odd nm away

Monitoring
Certainly not those who turn their radios off because it supposedly draws too much power and then leaves the sounder and gps running.
Did the radio calls to a boat that ran out of fuel 1nm north of Turtle Bay last Saturday afternoon. The first boat to answer my call for any boats in the area to be able to offer assistance was a freighter some 200nm due west yet we had a few boats logged in as travelling to that general area. The Shark Bay boys had a 6 hour round trip to tow them back to safety.

Hire boat
Hire boat, 2 adults and 2 children, booked in with Steep Point ranger so would suggest they were camped down there.
