Rules check

Hi,

Is it allowed to fillet and clean fish and squid on the boat before returning to ramp?   Or do they need to be kept whole in case of fisheries inspection?

you can fillet, but....

some fish, like a lot of cods and fish with slot or maximum size limits, are generally required to be kept whole, until you hit land. fillets must be 30cm in length. 2 fillets is equal to 1 fish.

all the rules are on the fish.wa.gov.au site. best read them and decipher yourself, as you can get very different answers from facebook and fishing sites, and not all of them are right.

Squid you should be able to clean at sea

There's no size limit, only a boat / possession limit. There's also no confusion as to what sort of "fish" you have in your possession

Leave the skin on

It's also a requirement to leave the skin on any fillets so they can be identified.

If I had a bigger boat I'd be doing much more processing at sea, so much cleaner, quick wash in salt water...

Rip skins off when home...

Squid give em a clean after been dragged in the scaler bag...

My mate got me out of the habit of washing down fillets, just a wipe down but you need to bleed them properly on catching them, especially fish like herring but dhus are really clean. Results in a much nicer flesh without that opaque look. Give it a crack.

With you 100% on that one.

With you 100% on that one. Havnt washed my fillets for years. Quick wash just before cooking. Any water will wash natural oils off and flesh will start to taint straight away.
