The run continues

Went out with my next door neighbour Greg and his son Matt. We decided we would try to find some new ground and plotted a course for some spots we had been given but never fished before. The day started very slowly with the first 4 spots not looking like anything but sand, so we moved on and kept looking for fresh ground. We ended up about 19nm west of Ocean Reef and found a boat already on one of the spots we had been given, so decided to head North a bit and zig zag around until we picked something up.

We hadn't traveled far before we found a nice lump with some fish on it. The fickle Northerly wind made the drift a bit awkward but we managed to get it over the spot a few times and Matt landed a nice Morwong.

A few more drifts and a small baldie was landed (Matt again).

We moved further north and found another new lump. We gave it a few drifts and on the third drift I pulled in this beauty. Went 9.5kg and made me a happy camper, yet again.

Later we moved again and found more good ground. Greg managed a small dhuie around 55cm and then repeated it a bit later with another fish around 58cm. This one had a twinkle in its eye when it saw me.

We fished on until about 5pm and I landed a pb flathead (no where near as big as Sherbert's but a big'n all the same). We moved back in to the nine mile reef and had a heap of fun with skippy on light line. Matt was the champion skippy man.

A great day on the water and that spot that the other boat was on when we first did a pass left the scene and we had a couple of drifts over it. WOW!!! a mountain of fish and lots of big ones amongst them. Nothing would take a bait and I even tried jigging for no return. But it is marked in now and we will be back for sure. looks like it holds a lot of promise for the future. Thanks to Greg for a great day out and for getting us onto some nice fish.

Tired of catching Dhuies

Mon, 2007-02-12 20:27

Actually, yes I am. Doesn't mean I don't get excited when I catch one, its just that I would like to catch a few other species too. I am considering a big assault on some offshore tailor after seeing that monster that was posted last week.

That spot we stopped at Shamu, must hold big Tailor, we just need the right conditions and right equipment and spend a bit more time chasing them and I reckon it will happen. Getting one on film on a popper would be awesome. Just need two deckies, one to fish, one to film and I'll skipper. As winter approaches that is what I will be looking to do.

No some other spots

Tue, 2007-02-13 17:32

I still haven't fished yours Street.

The spots were from a listing a guy had when he was selling his boat. (Part of the specifications sheet with the boat). Greg was seriously considering the boat at the time and kept the sheet. Most of the marks end in a zero which suggest they are just weigh points that the guy has taken off a map, but some of the ones with other digits in the numbers are actual lumps etc.

I have only fished about 5 of them out of about 50 spots on the list.

Took your advise

Tue, 2007-02-13 19:03

Andy, took your advise on Sunday, 35m 15k out landed a nice 6kg Dhuie. (not sure how to attach photo not computor savy)Successfully released a couple of smaller ones thankfully ! With so many caught on the weekend makes me wonder what the stocks are like directly off our coast ? Are they or could they be under pressure ? It would be disappointing if our kids don't enjoy the magnificent fishery we all enjoy right on our back door.

Well done Craig J....

They are certainly out there but in very low numbers and few and far between. Makes me feel a little guilty when I pull one in but as long as I don;t hammer the same spots they will hopefully have time to grow and keep producing offspring.

If you still have your fish frame give the guys at Fisheries a call and drop off the frame for research. It helps with the guilt trip a little. There is a thread that Mav started with their contact details on it. I have three in the freezer waiting for them as we speak.

It feels like we are saying well done and great catch to you every weekend Andy, but Well Done is deserved.

Its always good if you can head out in search of new ground and still come back with a catch like yours.

Im really going to have to come up north for a fish me thinks.

Yeh agree!

Well done Andy on the catch, yeh I agree about the guilts also hense why I release so many fish so what I keep is truelly like 2 in 15 fish for a session (just my catch that is) and they're all good fish ie good dhues/baldy's/pinkys/KG's etc

For other members that need to know, you can Contact Dr Jill St John, phone (08) 9203 0111 for more information on donating Dhufish frames. Most all tackle stores will hold frames until Fisheries Researches pick them up!

Jamie Chester (Western Angler) posted this recently (hope you didn't mind Jamie)
"Just had a call from Ian keay down at the fisheries research place at Hillarys Marina. Seems they are pretty desperate for some rec caught dhufish frames from between mandurah and lancelin so if you could possibly donate them to science by dropping them off down there it would be appreciated"

Absolutely Ryan

I met Ian last week when I handed over some more frames and I have invited him and Nick Jarvis to come down to the Coipasa Classic weigh-in next week and get access to all the Dhuies (presuming we will have some between about 25 anglers) plus any other fish they want to sample. He said he would be willing to do it all on site and show the guys what it is they do. I will try and get some footage of it then load it up on the site so all the guys can appreciate what it is all about.

Now that's out of their own weekend and shows the commitment to the cause by these guys. Hats off to them I say.

Cheers
