Sailfish extravaganza in Rompin Malaysia

Greeting to all. I would like to share my experience sailfish fishing in Kuala Rompin Malaysia. In this trip we manage to land nearly 20 sailfish in 2 days fishing. Kuala Rompin is deemed to be the sailfish fishing capital of Asia, it has one of the best fishing grounds in this region. Other than using live bait, surface popping also can attracted sailfish. Nestled on the south east coast of the Malaysian peninsular, Kuala Rompin is a unique area offering anglers of all experience and skill levels spectacular sailfish action. The sailfish are drawn to this part of the South China Sea as the warm currents offer them the ideal feeding grounds for the masses of baitfish within this area. Sailfish work in packs hunting these waters for bait schools and their aggressive feeding patterns offer anglers numerous sport fishing opportunities. The warm, calm waters off the coast of Kuala Rompin are ideal for anglers to target quantities of these billfish. 40kg sail Double hook up Birds flying over sailfish In action Ladies Angler Toying with bait Hook up More hook up Fishing boat Using sabiki/apollo rig to catch some livebait

Great pics there, Rompin is where I caught my first sail, but not on a lure, it was with live bait.  Use to fish all the islands off the East coast when I lived in that part of the world. Top stuff guys.

G'day EddSome great pics

Thu, 2011-01-06 13:26

G'day Edd

Some great pics there and the water looks sensational.  Besides catching a few sailies, I'd love to jump in the drink with them and film some sailies working the bait.  What is the water visibility like?  Gin clear would be great.

From your site link, looks like a nice place for the family to relax by the pool, whilst I'm out playing - is this doable/recommended?

Family trip hey Alfred?!?!?

Cheers Pete

You guys should speak to

Thu, 2011-01-06 13:41

You guys should speak to Kasey and Darren from Tackle Source as well, I think they like Pekan as well, bit more of a mixed bag jigging.

Might be lucky to do some filming Pete, water has been a bit cloudy in a few of the pics over the years!

Pete, the water is usually crystal, unless there is heavy rain on the mainland, the the wash from the rivers clouds the water.  In the old days a non diving visibility check cost 20 cents.  You just tossed a 20 cent piece and counted how long befoe you couldn't see it.  If you get to 10 you will have no vis issues at all.

Family holiday sounds like a plan Pete.

Hi Pete D !

I happen to have a video Sailfish in underwater but I forgot where I saved it. The video was shoot only using a olympus compact camera. I will upload it as soon i find it for your refrence.  Average water clarity is 4 out of 5 (5 is very clear) and as far as i know sailfish doesn't like a crystal clear water. For example sailfish doesn't go up to Tioman Island. Tioman Island is a well known scuba diving spot.  Please correct me if i'm wrong :)

For family trip a stay in Hotel will be good because they have a lots of facilities. We also have a homestay accomodation and it's a bit cheeper but only have a basic facilities.

Hi Till !

Actually Darren i can say he is one of our friend. Our group buy a lots of stuff with him for our trip to maldives last year. I think the reason Darren more like to go to pekan because pekan have more jigging spot if to compare with rompin.

Alfred !

If you tost a 20 cent it's okay but if you tossed a 20 dollar bill, I will jump and save the bill .

Thanks for the info and video edd.  Vis. is OK.

Here is my effort out of Broome.  As you will see, the visibility was not that great...but this makes the sharks come in closer for a look

I know there are a whale shark between Aur and Dayang  from my friends was a scuba diving operator in Tioman but i don't know if the whale shark still there.

The last time I saw the whale shark while fishing in one of the oil rig in Terengganu. Try to snap some underwater photo but cannot get good shots.

Alfred,They still swim

Alfred,

They still swim through. Nothing like Exmouth, but when the season is right you might find one or two.

Jamie,

I don't like jigging in Malaysia at all. I would rather jig in the Coburn Sound, but occasionally I have nothing better to do.
