Capes
Apparently they're rounding the capes already, well a couple of schools. Another month or so and they should be almost in the metro, usually around Easter they show up in numbers. If they are anything like last year, you guys will have a ball!

Possibly
Could be El Nino or the currents changing.
Theres a show on this Thursday Night, ABC, called the The Life And Times Of El Nino, might be worth a watch to see if it eludes to any current/oceanic changes etc.
The perth metro Salmon run was certainly something to behold last year! We had countless sessions on them, yes Andy, I did call them for dolphinfish in a heightened state of excitement, once!..... ;)

salmon info
Here is a little heads up for all you salmon chasers - I saw one snorkelling out the back of penguin island on Aust day. Was only one but not a bad size at around the 3-4kg mark so they may well turn up pretty early this year

I got told 2 weeks ago by
I got told 2 weeks ago by someone in the know ( scientist)_ that the capes current is strong,in actual fact he said to me that it is doing things this year, that they haven't seen for a long time, for those that don't know, the capes current is wind generated current, this current is pushing around the capes and then hugging the coastline up the coast, this is good for Salmon, they love the colder water and follow it up to the Metro. so fingers crossed it may be another good year.
I also had a meeting yesterday about something else ( blackwood) and was told that the pilchards on the south coast are coming back in great numbers, The commercial fleet got given a quota, and the commercial fisherman themselves actually halved this on their own accord.
This too has to benefit the salmon, if the minister agrees that there is no commercial fishing for salmon over the Easter period and they aren't allowed to net them after the turn the capes we could get a far better Salmon fishery, as long as the colder water does the right thing they should get as far up as the Metro and beyond

good for fishing but surely
good for fishing but surely the extra salmon will have a severe impact on the herring fishery as well?

Herring
The salmon run last year was reportedly the biggest in 40 years. I haven't seen to much of a decline in herring in Cockburn Sound over the last six to eight months. You could be right though, a couple more seasons like last year and the herring numbers may thin out.
Three days without it and I get a little jumpy

Nealez good point, you know
Nealez good point, you know that our humbled Herring starts its life cycle in south Australia, what happens is they spawn on the west coast and south coast, their larvae ends up in south Australia, they grow up to adult fish, then swim their way west wards and spawn, so the fish you catch here are mature spawning fish. we are the key in the cog, we don't manage these fish properly and we are in trouble.Soupster made a comment that they haven't declined over the last 6 to 8 months, maybe so, but what did we used to catch, I don't need to go in to this, anyone who has fished the metro for 30 years knows what we used to catch. this is alarming the scientists to. The finfish man Dr rod Lenaton is so concerned that he has applied for more funding for the humbled herring but cant get it, its not a seriously caught commercial fishery so chances of getting funding is slim, another reason why we need a licence, we could pay for this research considering that a lot of Junior anglers cut their teeth on herring, did you know there is a legal size for commercial take of the Herring its 180mmin WA
In saying that thou, last year I saw that much bait fish in the Metro when the salmon where around, it was a joke, I was shocked that they actually took a bait or lure, massive schools of scalies / slimies from swany to Hillary's something that I haven't seen in a long time. I suggest this is what they were feeding on and helped the season we had
