Salmon 2015
Hi everyone, me and dad really want to go and catch some salmon on a day trip down south, flicking lure hopefully at some schools on some well known beaches. I've been looking at some of my old Western Angler magazines and saw the April/May edition of last year, which had a salmon atlas of WA which is very helpful. We are thinking of going on the week after Easter (which I have heard is peak salmon time) and having a day trip, leaving home at 3am and getting there for about 6/8am depending on where we go.
the main question is where to go? I reckon we could get to Albany at 7am or somewhere near, where we know fish will be so we can hopefully get onto some good fish. Please recommend spots, not ur secret ones because we all know what happens then, but general locations that we could get to from Leeming in the city before 8am.
If you recommend a lure aswell it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
lachie

shelly beach just west of
shelly beach just west of albany is good for salmon just throw halco 30g or 40g slicers in the schools. if they are hungry they will take just about anything. another good spot is cheynes beach just east of albany thats a really good spot on the beach if you have access to a 4x4, otherwise just the rocks are fine at cheynes beach just watch out for the black rock coz it is very slippery

My advice
would be flexible.
Every season is different and where the main 'run' of fish can change weekly.
Take 2014 for example where along the Capes coast. We started getting fish mid March right through to late May.
Then they seemingly disappeared.
You guys in the metro area caught salmon for almost the whole rest of the year.
Best bet would be the Albany area but that's a hell of a lot longer drive than Dunsborough/Margaret River.

Rubbish
mate you should see the coastline from Dunborough to the cape after Easter! Absolute rubbish tip.
Empty stubbies/soft drink bottles, plastic bags, scrap line and bait bags as far as the eye can see.
BTW why the hell would you even use bait for Salmon?
and people wonder why rec. fishers get a bad name...

bunker bay
Me and the mrs head down to bunker bay around mid to late april, last year was wild with the salmon hanging in the bay the whole weekend, chilled place as well. I noticed that the salmon hung around the reefy areas all day long and were easier to temp with plastics on light gear then chasing schools up and down all day pegging metals and cranking reels through hords of fish. Managed around 15 fish on my 3to5 kg gear. Great fun!

Bremer Bay
My parents were at Beaufort inlet at Bremer bay last weekend with a 4wd club event, some people took Beach gear along and got quite a few salmon off the beach. I have some pics on my phone of a pretty good school hanging off the beach.

Warren beach pemberton
the warren beach is the best place its gods country down there. from mandurah it takes about 3 hours to the turn off then its a 1 hour trek through awesome sand dunes and national park. once you get to the top of the warren hill you look out over the ocean and you can see the schools of salmon in the waves. you can camp anywhere you like along the beach or in the sand dunes out of the wind. the warren river is fresh water you can boil it for ya showers and its also full of big trout and marron not far from the river mouth. i personally don't use lures as a 3 gang and a slab of mullet does the job and you get to kick back have a few cold beers and relax and wait for ya rod to buckle over. i cant wait for the easter long weekend
shut up and fish

Cheynes beach last year,
Cheynes beach last year, they wouldn't take any of the many different slices, stickbaits, poppers, plugs and soft plastics we threw at them.
Switched to bait, plenty of fish landed.
I never use bait for Salmon. Unless the scenario is as above. It does happen, though not often.

Few scouts around the capes
Few scouts around the capes but no schools we fished from cosy corner/Hamelin to yaliningup and almost every stop inbetween.
couplle spotted around Hamelin area but just one or two fish, just the scouts or fish that broke away early
Need that first big swell and storm to break up the schools a bit more then it'll be on around the capes.
as said earlier don't be a tool and leave your rubbish everywhere! We all gotta fish and enjoy these areas so don't ruin for everyone else,
same as etiquette, there was almost a few punch ons last year between the short fuses and the rude or uneducated.
relax, be calm and enjoy the sport these fish give you.
The art of fishing consists of casting, winding, trolling and jigging
while freezing, sweating, swatting and swearing.
