Salmon

Just got home from Augusta empty handed after a couple of days at what are normally salmon hot spots, was talking to a couple of pro's at the pub and they reckon they have only been getting them from the south coast, how true are the reports of salmon as far up as Perth? Hmm maybe not.

Mate i was down at Hamelin
Mate i was down at Hamelin bay last weekend, there are litterly salmon everywhere.
was the easiest Ive seen to find. Was just flicking metals around over gutters, reef lumps and picking them up. Not to mention the BIG schools (some i saw were easily 10-15 tonne).
Watched the pro's net good schools 4 out of the 5 days we were there, one school would have been 8 tonne.

Was at Hamelin on Wednesday
Was at Hamelin on Wednesday (2 May) morning, didnt see any salmon. Was there from before dawn till around 8:30am. There were a heap of pros there just sitting in their utes waiting also, so i guess i was in the right area. Also checked out Hamelin Back Beach, Cosy Corner and Foul Bay and couldnt find any salmon unfortunantly. Couple days before i had a look around Moses Rock, Injidup, Smiths, Canal Rocks, Yallingup, Sugarloaf, Bunkers, Eagle Bay, Point Piquet and Meelup. Couldnt find any.
I sight fish for them though driving to each carpark/viewpoint and looking for schools to cast lures at. If you were to sit and wait with a bait you would mostly likely get some, but i prefer to hunt for the schools, this time in lucked out though i guess

Pros netting tonnes at a time
Pros netting tonnes at a time for cat food. Is it just me or is that just crap?
Government should buy their liscences out (need to have some compassion for the pros as it is their livelihood), plenty of good paying jobs elsewhere, leave the salmon as a sport fish.

I maybe wrong
but i think they stopped the pet food thing a few years back and its only human consumption now.Again i maybe wrong and if i am then this will be the place to find out either way.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

Cray bait
If they can truck it to the cannery at Albany and its below 14deg its canned for human consumption, anything above that and its frozen and cut up as salmon cutlets for cray bait.
Supplying salmon to the pet food market ceased 20+ years ago unlike mulies that send their poorer quality ones for pet food instead of flooding the market and bringing down prices.

Cheers for the info Carnarvonite
A mate is always arguing that they are still used for pet food.

I spent the weekend fishing
I spent the weekend fishing Sugarloaf, Bunkers, Eagle Bay, Point Piquet and Meelup and not only did I not catch one, I didnt see any one of the possibly hundred or so other people fishing catch one. Could see some big schools of fish breaking the surface out from Meelup and Point Piquet but they were a couple of km offshore.

Most fish are caught from
Most fish are caught from landbased possition very close to the rock drop off and do not get to the markers
fished both from the rocks and from my dinghy doing all the bays.
More an issue when catching them from a dinghy

That's Castle Bay
those markers are yet another reason to not fish the bay.
Guys there are heaps on the west coast, just need to get out there and look around. Just not in this shithouse weather

The markers are no
The markers are no problems.
It stops the boaties getting pelted with lead and hooks when they rip through the lines of the land based fella's and keeps every body happy
Look at the other posting with the GoPro to get the idea why fishing in a dinghy for salmon is the way to go.

Whitehills - North or South?
Hi,
Am planning a trip to Whitehills area this weekend in search of some salmon. Having not fished there before, wondering if people would be kind enough to provide some pointers in terms of which area is generally better - North from the Whitehills entry towards Tim's, or South towards Preston?
Cheers,
Drof

South
Go south, the further the better, preferrably south of Preston about 5 miles to what was known as the false cape. Salmon schools used to hit there regularly after coming out of Bunkers end of Geographe bay and continuing their trek northwards.
Should get to tangle with a shark or two as a bonus at night.

Jumping Salmon at Whitehills
Went down to Whitehills on Saturday morning. It was a beautiful morning, with just a light offshore breeze (great for casting). Got on the beach at sunrise (7am), and for the first hour (7am to 8am) there were large salmon breaking the surface and jumping out of the water about 200m out from the beach (on and off in several spots). Got a berly trail and nice slick going, but couldn't get them in close enough to take lures or bait. A few dolphins around also - not helping! By around 8am, didn't see any more fish jumping, and didn't catch one.
There are definitely salmon there, just need to find somewhere where they're in a bit closer.
Drof
BTW, about 6kms(?) South of the Whitehills entrance the beach is starting to get narrower, steep and soft(ish).

Salmon north
I have heard reports of Salmon as far North as Lancelin. Is this believable??
Was heading up there tonight for the weekend but have never seen them up there.
