salmon fishing today

having the day off today i decided to go for a drive around the cape and look for a few salmon just to let you perth lads know if they was around ... i stopped at wyadup today at 11pm to see a large school at mitchells rock . i waited for about 30 minutes for it to finanlly head my way before i moved down the beach at it for a few casts. after i got close the silly school turned around and headed back away, so i walked with them back to mitchells while getting one fish.

all the crew from that car park then came down so i left to walk back to my car as the fish had stopped biting and had gone deep. on the way back to the car i found another small school of large salmon right in the shallows and a prime spot for the little rod i was using. i managed 2 fish from this school before i lost them in the swell.

so back to the car and a drive to mitchells carpark saw the main school back near the beach so i waited for the school to head left and for people to get bored of them sitting deep. after about 30 minutes the school moved so i jogged down and picked up another 2 fish in quik time..

was a great 3 hours of fishing with 5 caught and only dropping 1 . using the short rod made it more interesting but i was a little lazy this morning to gear up the big rods.

sorry about the pictures as i was by myself.

Good effort feral

Tue, 2010-03-30 16:10

I remember doing a similar thing about 10 years ago on Mitchells beach. Running up and down the beach chasing the school.

I fished Dunsborough area over the weekend and didn't see 1 salmon.

Good report!

Tue, 2010-03-30 16:12

Was at Castle Rock near Dunsborough today and managed two fish...one of 'em must've been six kilos...on a soft plastic and a Smilin Jacks ripoff. No big schools, in fact no schools at all, just twos and threes and sometimes sevens or tens swimming along the reef/sand edge.

Fish were very fussy and had to make the lures jump and move around a lot because I think they were hitting them more out of anger than hunger.

Good work mate. Damo from

Tue, 2010-03-30 16:27

Good work mate. Damo from Dunsborough sports got 5 salmon this morning from Bunker Bay beach. He said the same as Auslobster, not big schools just small groups of 10 or so.

Think I'll give fishing a miss this weekend, too crowded. Might have to work over easter so I can go fishing when everone f%$ks off.

When are you heading to Exy? I'm off in 3 weeks. Can,t wait.

Fisherboy...

Tue, 2010-03-30 16:37

...most of the time you cast your lure/bait at the fish, but you can certainly get them blind casting as well, particularly early in the day when the sun is low and you can't see the fish very well anyway.

I like to fish areas where I can use light tackle...this allows me to blind cast as much as I want to all day without getting tired. However, it probably cost me this morning because most of the fish I saw were going by right in front of me while my lure was a good 20 to 30 metres outside of them from blind casting!

Good to see

Tue, 2010-03-30 18:38

We didn't see much at all last weekend and now you've caught some at Wyadup, I might have to pay it a visit very soon. Sure soggy sand at Wyadup too. Great catch and pics Feral. AND small rods are better than big rods any how in those nice sandy areas!!

actually not that light

Wed, 2010-03-31 11:05

actually not that light emric .. just short :P

i was using a daiwa certate hyper 4000 with pe2 on a shimano raider II  7foot 5-10kg ...

usually i go much lighter running pe1 on a light 9 foot rod. but with everyone fishing at the moment i didnt want to be playing around with the fish and getting tangles with ppl casting over me while fighting fish.

the lightest i go on the beach if i have some fish to myself is 8 lb on my bream rods .. thats super fun.

So where's all the bloody

Wed, 2010-03-31 20:06

So where's all the bloody fish TODAY Feral?? Did you hide them so I cant do my killing spree down there?!? JK lol

Best I got was a sniff of the lure's ass!! Saw a handful of schools but cloudy condition and the wind made it very difficult to find fish. Some were caught at Meelup, Bunkers and one from Mitchells today. I scored the delicious doughnut!!
