Salmon Run 2011

Well, who said there wouldn't be a Salmon run this year.

Went for a 3 day fish over the weekend with 10 mates, sighted PLENTY of Salmon in the surf and landed 10, biggest 6.1kg with the average just over the 5kg mark. Dropped just as many. Herring in the surf in plague proportions. Made for an awesome weekend on the light gear, a Stradic 2500 matched to a 3-6kg Shimano Jewel with 10lb fireline. All fish were taken on Halco Twisties or a Rapala X-rap

Anyone hesitating about going south to get in to the fish.....DON'T! Can't wait until they hit metro beaches now.

Wouldn't be the first post that has gone on this forum without a location, but we're definetly no where near Albany.

Just look at the sun set. I would hazzard a guess its Whitehills to Preston. Nice fish and you dont have to give the location

I'll say nothing more other than the fish are still well and truly east of Augusta.

Mon, 2011-04-11 08:16

but i'm confused as hell now. First you say there on there way to metro waters, then you say there well and truly east of Augusta????

Well done on getting onto some salmon but i'm sticking with no west coast salmon run, just drip and drabs

No mate

Mon, 2011-04-11 08:03

Im with you. If you find a cool spot and there is nobody else there I would keep it a secret. So nice to fish with only your crew and no other rabble to worry about. Serenity and fishing can go hand and glove, but sometimes a bit rare. Thats why I love Marroning in remote streams, Just Mother nature, you, a pole and some marron (hopefully). Now this I DO miss from down south.

Great effort. By the way were any of the guys in the photos involved with rallying, a familiar face in the shots?

Matt,

I didn't say the salmon are close to metro waters at all, I said I can't wait until they GET here.

As to when that happens is anyones guess. Could be a month, could be two months.

I'm just hoping, as is every single fisho on this forum, that a metro salmon run does eventuate.

Dont really get the point of threads like this .

Salmon as we all know are highly migratory so chances are they will be somewhere else by now anyway . Its not like you would be sharing your fav dhu lump or snapper patch .

So if you are not prepared to share your location , even just a general area , why the thread , unless of coarse you are just looking for a pat on the back over how clever you are .

Threads like these, looking for "a pat on the back" as you put it would account for 90% of the threads on this forum.

The amount of times I have read posts that don't give a location are countless, and quite frankly, used to shit me to tears. I now relise thats how people roll, as long as they are catching fish themselves that all that matters. No one seems to be willing to part with their own "secret locations"

Maybe this thread is a bit of what goes around comes around.....

And the point of this thread was not to gain a pat on the back, more so to give everyone a bit of confidence that the fish are there. I know after reading previous posts that people like cuthbad and brenz are heading down soon to chase the sharks that chase the salmon........... they may enjoy reading this thread knowing the fish are there.

Mon, 2011-04-11 23:58

Spot on man, nice report!

No need to give a location, just pointing out that they are on the way is enough I reckon. How you can cop sh!t for going to the effort of posting a report is beyond me....

As people have said they move quick so giving much detail in location is kinda pointless, there would be schools far behind and well ahead of the ones you encountered I assume. Also, we have an entire thread dedicated to reporting on the salmon run, no need for these blokes to give away their beach.

Just waiting for the final member of our team to get back from Germany and its game on!!

Cheers

Mon, 2011-04-11 09:34

I was down with Simmo and Buschy for the weekend and had an awesome time.

Was my first time salmon fishing and ended up landing four, biggest 5.15kg and 740mm.

Used one lure all weekend and landed 21 fish on it (only caught one fish on bait).

Gear: Rapala X-Rap with a 4000 Shimano Stradic with a 20g chrome Halco Twisty

As for the spot.....it doesn't really matter, as you said swoffer chances are they have continued moving and they'll be at the next spot by now anyway.

And we aren't looking for a pat on the back from you or anyone else, we caught fish, that's all the patting on the back we need. Thought it would be nice to share some of our photo's for a change, instead of just looking at yours.

Anyways....bitch session over....looking forward to a trip to cervantes next week....

LOL, shaw_catch, mistaken identity there, swoffer has NEVER posted a fishing pic/report on here in the 4 + years they have been a member.  Happy to be corrected though swoffer.

Nice work, white sand + blue ocean + calm conditions + light gear + lures + good salmon + a match made in heaven in my books. Keep the reports coming guys.

I rarely bother with beach fishing, but with every second weekend now free I may have to give it a go. Have to fill in those days somehow, may as well be camping, fishing and drinking.

the beach

Mon, 2011-04-11 10:28

had plenty of deep gutters in close (i know cos i fell into one at one point searching for that extra 10 metres on my cast ). The swell was huge the day we when we arrived and we fished what seemed to be the deepest area. Sunday morning was the day when the salmon schools really started to show up, most off them sitting in the first breaking wave which would have been around 100-120m offshore. Just about on maximum casting range with a 15 gram twisty and a 10 knot breeze at your back.

Mon, 2011-04-11 10:29

It was pretty shallow, but there was a nice gutter running the length of the beach. You can't really see it in the photo's, but there were two breakers and the salmon were surfing in the back breaker. We could see three very big schools a few hundred metres of shore that were getting smashed by dolphins.

We managed to entice some in in the arvo with burley, but the morning ones just did a shallow pass. One of the morning ones that i got, i waded out tit deep and hit the back breaker which resulted in my chrome twisty getting smashed :)

There are big fat herring (25 to 30cm) everywhere down there.

Hope that helps a little...im only just starting to lean to read the beach :P

Mon, 2011-04-11 14:10

Sure is something better than walking 100m from camp to fish, its walking a few paces!!!! LOL. I thought that it did look far and beer runs would get me fatigued fast at the pace I drink beer in such an awesome spot, with fish and a few mates.

Miss that side of things up here.

Salmo yeh thats him in the photo, but cant remember where I have run into him. I use to organise Rallies (like Rally Oz) and compete in others, aswell as helping out whereever I could.

PM me his full name and I will see if it jogs the memory cells (if its OK)

Great fun

Mon, 2011-04-11 19:24

Was a great weekend away and brilliant to finally break my salmon duck. That was the only fish I caught for the weekend and I still have no regrets about letting it swim away....in hindsight though after scoffing down salmon freshly smoked on the beach, my next one will definately be destined for the dinner table.

There's certainly no harm in keeping the location to ourselves. I believe we were at the front of the run. They won't be around the cape yet in any large numbers and I believe that will still be a couple of weeks away. The schools we saw were not massive in numbers. I'm with Simmo and hope they make it to the metro beaches so I can have another crack at landing another for the smoker. :-)

I'm amazed that nobody left that place without third degree burns...beer + balloons + gas = excellent fun. :-)

Nice fish fellas. Keep your spot secret, as others have said its great to have a place you can go without every man and his dog being there first.

I'm heading down south over easter.. any one got reports of the Salmon as far east as Windy Harbour yet?

I've had reports that the schools are hitting the warmer waters on the west coast and turning thier noses back towards Albany.
