Salmon school metro area - underwater snaps
Submitted by Hobie-Wan on Thu, 2009-02-12 11:32
A friend of mine was snorkelling around a metro reef yesterday (11th Feb), about 100m off the beach. Se said at one point a big school of large fish swam past him and he managed to snap this photo. He asked me if I knew what they were, and I am pretty sure they are Salmon. Can anyone confirm this?
If they are salmon, its strange to see a big school of them in the metro area at this time of year isn't it?

Salmon
They all look to be too big for salmon trout so will call them as leftovers from last years salmon run.

the hi temps will keeep them wide, last yr pple were catching ytg,s at fish rock old dunsb because the salmon were so thick was good to see, alot of small sharks will be following no doubt like bronzies etc

Excuse me while I theorise a
Excuse me while I theorise a little. Its a dash of speculation and observation.
Some of the inshore presence has occured on a rapid barometer fall but it could also be up I dont know.
The common occurance with the inshore salmon in the past few years has been the presence of bait schools which are already in numbers offshore fluttering the surface but not what they were in years past as yet.
It could be current direction where the bait ends up that brings them in or way off.
Given there is bait already fluttering at the 5 mile mark they maybe in small groups here already to meet up with the bait.
While normally they are with herring schools the other presence of baitfish in big numbers could pursaude the salmon to do what the past couple of years has produced.
Is it a current wipe on or wipe off with the bait pushed and the salmon after it?
Its a lotto and someone would know more.
Please correct me if you have information that contradicts what Im saying?

Great pics
Think I'll skip the theory lesson this time and say, great photo's, looks like it might be time to get excited as a metro shorebased angler.![Wink Wink](/sites/all/modules/tinymce/tinymce/jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif)
