Salmon still around

G'day

Just a quick report.

I hadn't been out fishing in a boat for a little while, me and a mate packed up his tinny and headed out to try find some inshore snapper. Like everyone knows, fishing is never predictable. We set the anchor and only managed an undersized snapper and a couple nice skippy as well as a couple unstoppables on the light gear; most likely sambos.

My mate then spotted a few birds dive bombing in the distance, not a massive amount of birds but they were definitely interested in something. Headed over there and manged to wrangle one nice sized bonito trolling around the birds. The school quickly disappeared though. Thinking what would be our next move I noticed a small school of fish in a wave, of course my mate didn't beleive me. So we both had a cast, I landed a nice salmon and my mate some how pulled a nice skippy out of a school of salmon.

Eventually found the birds again, this time it was more sizeable, with a huge school of salmon boiling up the surface pretty hard. I got the 1.5-3kg rod out with my ci4 2500 with 8lb braid and had some fun. Never seen a reel scream so hard, great fun, all my salmon were caught on a Maria stickbait. The school went missing so we moved onto fishing a near by reef for some herring on lures, then called it a day.

The numbers in the school was comparable to 4-6weeks ago, but the size of the fish was generally smaller. Didn't manage any snapper, but still had a great morning on the water... and good to see the salmon are still kicking around.

Yeah Beau, they are amazing to catch.

I had been gettig them on the troll mostly, so I had to use heavier gear to handle the deep diving minnows. So it was great to bust out the 1-3kg rod with a stick bait to tackle them.

We ended up taking the hooks off of our poppers and stickbaits after about 5 fish each and just enjoyed the show for the next 3 hours! Was surprised to see such big numbers still

Salmon on Thursday

Sun, 2014-07-13 16:47

I took my nephew and his daughter out on Thursday at 2pm from CPBC ramp. Got as far as Woodman's Point Groyne and found the birds working and the salmon on the boil. Cast out some metal slices and it was all on, double hook ups galore. Lost 3 and picked up 3 and found another swimming on its back so quickly netted that one as well. All great sizes. There were a few other boats working the salmon as well and they were all picking them up easy as pie. A great 45 minute session.

Carried on out past Carnac for a couple of miles and anchored up at a new spot with the sounder lit up like a Xmas tree and it stayed like that for the next few hours. No snapper but heaps of Skippy all of a good size. Kept 18 plus a couple of good KGW around 52 - 54cm. Also picked up a couple of Dhuies that were undersize, they were successfully released. Picked up a couple of Sambos which were also released.

The old smoker was certainly working overtime on Friday and Saturday morning. The Salmon were absolutely delicious. The Skippy weren't too bad either.
