Salmon Update
Submitted by carnarvonite on Wed, 2009-03-18 15:12
Rang a mate on a salmon team down south for an update on the salmon run this arvo
Not good news I'm afraid,he was at Eagle Bay and hasn't seen a fish as yet.His father fishes from Windy Harbour and its much the same there as well with the exception of a few fish here and there trickling through but not in the size schools that normally run at this time of the year.
With the report of a spaniard being caught off Eagle Bay recently it may turn out to be a non event like the run about 10 years back where they only reached Augusta, hit the warm water, spawned and headed back east.We can only hope that isn't the case this year and that they are only running late

Last year they didn't show up in force until the second week of April and some were mixed with striped tuna so don't read too much into the mackie capture just yet!

Salmon info mixed!
Had a mate just spend the last week plus working between Albany & Walepole and fished heaps of areas (camping out in 4wd). He said he saw & caught a shit load of salmon. He said he's never seen so many and alot of bays were full & erupting on bait. They were fatter than normal and they were spewing up big herring alot.
I spoke to a contact that lives down South today and he said that the Capes had front runner salmon already and his mates had been getting them consistantly and yes Salmon schools not trouts. That same contact said Meelup had a massive school that got smashed by the commercial guy!
I'll go down for a look soon but going off what i've heared i reckon its gonna be a good run still but just a bit late.....by a smidge!

You got told a lot of crap Ryan, the pros haven't netted one salmon between them yet. They got a few resident juveniles in Eagle Bay about 5 days ago...and thats it.

when the salmon run do they
when the salmon run do they ALL head up further north?
for example lets say the salmon run reaches metro perth by late march or something...does that mean there'll be no salmon down near albany/walpole/denmark way? or do some or lots of fish still stay down there?

Salmon!
From what i've found the salmon will move North but many will stop off at certain area's and cease going any further in their run. Local haunts between Esperance & Walepole have rezzy salmon but the mass do move. Many keep on going depending on when the salmon started/joined the journey and other factors like bait/water temp/sharks/dolphins etc. I'll often find front runners heading back as the last Northern salmon are still heading up!

A yak fisher had the pros
A yak fisher had the pros nett a school near him south of Dunsbourough on the weekend,so now the cats out of the bag there you go.
I guess some pros will try and keep mum as they do blame recs for breaking up the schools somewhat.
With Ryans report of shytes loads at Albany it will be a bumper crop this year

Very interesting I have read a few reports elsewhere where
people are stating there are no salmon around and others that have seen the big schools. I guess the best way is find out for ourselves.
Make sure you check it out

Its dependant on the current swing, temp etc.
They have been reported by commercials in past years out wide in the stomachs of large gamefish. In certain years they make their way out there instead in 70 metres plus.
Plenty of reports have occured lately but the schools have been 500 metres plus offshore. great if you have a boat.
A forecasted 4.5 metre swell and rain this weekend will keep them out wide this week. By Easter they should be in force at Dunsborough with only a few stragglers at present caught.

Geo Bay...
...can someone enlighten me on whether the pros can still fish in there? I thought they weren't allowed to anymore!
Might be worth having a look at Coventry's this weekend...usually one of the first metro areas they appear!

Reliable
Pretty reliable spot Auslobster, but certainly helps to be the first boat there.

Grrrr!
Two years ago Uncle and I found a patch of salmon hanging off a 9m ridge on the chicken run.
Started trolling and picking up double hookups at will. Few other boats joined in taking turns trolling over the fish. Everyone's happy.
Then some nobber pulls up to the ridge, drops anchor and chucks up a dive flag in 15 secs flat. Couldn't believe it (still cant). At first people begrudgingly reflected the flag but after a while they started trolling closer and closer to the ridge. It wasn't a safe situation for everyone but after a few close calls, nobber got the hint and left.
Eventually counted 27 boats working the run that day all having a fat time. Could have easily been a fatality though.
Not saying fisherman own the spots but a bit of common sense never goes astray.

You can always take the surf board...
In my younger days we used to get pumped on adrenaline looking at swell prediction like this weekend. These days I just dream on.... *sigh*

down at hamelin bay right
down at hamelin bay right now..
Will let you guys know over the next couple of days whats happening with the salmon.
At the moment winds are up coming from the north west, so cant see any schools up the beaches.
Tomorrow is a washout with 15-20knot westerlies pumping through, and the swell going up to 4.5metres!!!!
For those who come down this way. Next week Monday to friday is looking bloody awsome weather wise. Low swells low winds!!

Just spoke
to a salmon fisherman from Dunsborough - has a few but the only big school - about 20 ton passed out from Bunkers the other day but it was too rough to net much. Bugger all else apparently.
