Saltiga 6500 or Stella 20000 unsure what I should get...

Hey guys I'm looking at getting a new outfit that I will use for chasing blue grouper, sambos and yellow tail kings from the rocks down south I want to run 80 or 100lb braid and will be getting a pe 6-8 rod about 8ft long. I've fished for them before but most hookups last only seconds and leave me wonderng what the hell happened so it's time for a gear upgrade just after some input on both of those reel models
Cheers.

would a smaller version of

would a smaller version of the Stella reels suffice? say a 10000 stella or a 18000 with the higher gear ratio?

Saltiga's are very pricey compared to a Stella and they don't look as blingy especially a 6500DF ($1300 odd on Mo's)

in the end they are both killer reels

Stella 18000 is not smaller.

Stella 18000 is not smaller. 10000 is, however only available in high speed version in Australia... if you want low speed you will need to import Stella SW10000PG from Japan.

+1 for both

I have a 20k, my mate has a 6500, and we try each others gear out. You honestly can't go wrong with either.

As lame as this may be, I like the sound of the stella drag better :p ... Also shimano = 10  year warranty.

If the hookups only last seconds it sounds like you may be having other issues though... What setup are you using at the moment? As awesome as the high end reels are, you definitely don't have spend that much to stop big fish.

I deffinatly know that you

I deffinatly know that you dont need big gear to stop big fish i always underfish using ridiculously light gear for what I'm targeting.I use 2 outfits for them at the moment either a 6500 baitrunner or a tld 20 with either heavy 10ft rods or shorter boat rods up to 24kg I find that if you can't turn there head as soon as you hook up it's all over. I would also like the high end stuff because I'm fairly rough on my gear and do want something that will last and will perform how I want for years to come.

Do you recon you really need

Do you recon you really need that type of gear fishing off the rocks? 20kg+ worth of drag pressure form the rocks might be tough, what about a direct drive reel that you could lock up when you need to (Alvey)?

Spend more on your rod

Fri, 2011-04-29 21:12

Depends on how much you want to spend on the combo, both those reels are excellent but your gonna want a brute stick rod to muscle them up

6500 s extreme

Sun, 2011-05-01 14:11

stella's are simply outstanding ! no question!

i have a 20000 and a 10000 and they are brilliant

but ! i have recently bought a diawa 6500 s extreme and was so impredded with the toughness and reliability of this reel i have bought a dog fight and 2 4500's for the boys.

diawa 4500 catalina's are more than capable of stopping sambo's and GT's and are a previous years saltiga re-badged

stella's are ferrari's and saltigas are mack trucks

Sun, 2011-05-01 20:11

Bought an S-Extreme a few months ago, havnt given it a good test out yet but Iv heard nothing but good things. Feels good though... really good :) I have a 4500 Catalina as well and I can say first hand that its a gun reel and i'd highly recommend it. Definitely worth looking into.

go the stella

Sun, 2011-05-01 21:06

Ive seen 3 saltiga's at a well knowen shop in perth , all 3 with snaped bail arms, not the rail but the body that holds it to the main part of the reel, but i also dont know the reels history so it may or may not have been mistreated
