Sambo Jigging

Hey guys,

Was thinking of going out to the Hillarys Patch in the next few weeks but was not sure if it would be worth it considering the issue with sharks atm. Can anyone give a clue as to whether the sharks are dying down at all out there - or if its still a struggle just to land 1 fish Yell.

Any info would be appreciated,

Cheers.

Hi, i headed out on Monday with my brother to northern barge and a wreck about a mile behind it and both had sharks. We didn't land one fish, though from previous outings i found if your out real early you can get a few fish before the sharks start. If you go, best of luck and hope to see a report full of sambos:)

I have been out last 5 week ends in a row and landed a few sambos every single time so yes you can land some, just have to use heavyish gear. I have been lucky enough not to be sharked tooo often and lost f/all jigs but a few assist hooks lost. :)

if you lose fish to sharks

Thu, 2010-12-02 05:49

if you lose fish to sharks just move on, its pointless trying to beat the sharks. the more people are out there getting sharked the more chance there is of the season getting shut down in the future. it is a breeding agg after all!!

like just1morecast is was out monday on the outer barge and only landed one fish, lost about a dozen to sharks. Went to one of the southern spots and landed a couple before we had to go, not as many fish on the sounder but didnt see a shark either. As for hillarys i think you would be wasting your time.

A dozen lost

Thu, 2010-12-02 07:46

A dozen lost before you realised that the sharks were winning???

Cmon. That's just ridiculous and selfish. This fishery will be shut down soon and you will have no one to blame but yourselves. Gotta be smarter than that.

Brad

Waste of time...

Going to hillaries, north barge and the outer barge. You will just kill fish and gear.

The southern wrecks are the go,much smaller shows and smaller fish but no sharks.

confused

Thu, 2010-12-02 08:20

I've tried to search, but maybe I'm useless (likely). Can someone explain to me what is what when it comes to the barges? I know the main bunch just SW of Rotto - the so-called graveyard. There is a spot north and west of the main bunch - is that the 'northern' or 'outer'. Or is 'northern' the same as hillarys? I'm confused.

The hillarys aggregation is not the northern barge. The Hillarys patch is due west of Hillarys and probably 10nm north of the north barge from memory.

Yeah I think your right Till I've never been there but I'm sure on my gps its a good 10nm further than the northern barge in distance and pretty much straight out of Hillary's......like Chrisp said waste of time, I'm giving the jig a miss for a while now just too many sharks. Waste of time, money and sambos doing there thing. Squiding for me:)

Thu, 2010-12-02 08:34

so where is the 'northern' barge? and the 'outer' barge? We won't be jigging them either - doesn't sound very sensible to me, but just trying to orient myself.

Thu, 2010-12-02 08:47

The barges are a few mile west of rotto in 100-110m, the other barge is further west. They're actually marked on navionics charts.

Are the barges where the charter boats operate? We were out there last year and back again on this Saturday just orientating myself to know where we are fishing as we are coming from interstate....

Generally yes, Craig from saltwater has a few lesser known shallow spots for sambo's but have not heard if they have turned up there yet.

Seen as though there are sharks out deep, does anyone know of any other sambo jigging spots/options that are a bit closer to shore as i was hoping to get a couple over this summer.

Cheers,

shallow sambo spots

Thu, 2010-12-02 19:01

if you have a chartplotter with a navionics card or similar check out all the circular contour lines (or oval shaped ) out in 35/50m we fish them for sambos from two rocks to mandurah and most we have fished have produced sambos the main ones off two rocks in 40 m come up to 28 ish about 9 mile out and they produce all sizes of sambos all year round.  cheers
