Is that what they are Wal? I've always called them snook, and we often catch them but have only ever thought of them as bait. You reckon they go alright on the plate hey? Might have to give one a crack next time.
Thanks Wal, apologies again for the hijack. I'm really confused now as to what is good eating and what isn't. I had a quick google and came up with the images below for snook and pike (also called striped barracuda on the particular website) Both similar looking fish, but definitely different (fins were the give away for me)
Just to make it even more interesting, I'm 99% certain I have caught both of these fish around garden island. Next time I catch one I'll keep it and give it a try on the plate, but if anyone can clarify for me what is good eating and what isn't, I'm all ears.
They're both pretty good to eat although smaller ones have soft flesh which can get mushy if not looked after properly. The bigger ones (50cm+) are good in cutlets on the barbie, smaller ones fillet, batter, and shallow fry and they taste mint (better than herring I reckon)
Sorry to throw a spanner in the works but these are 100% snook.. And the saying snook bait sea pike bait is so far from wrong.. Snook are good to eat sea pike are small max 350g and bony and shit.. Don't mean to sound like a dick but this one always annoys me.. Don't believe me check the species books..

Agree!
Pike are good on the plate, and even better in the smoker. Used to slay in cervantes on the weed.
