Seastar Hydraulic steering parts

Today i blew a seal on my seastar hydraulic steering cylinder. I have located a few places in the states that sell the seal kits for about 100US. Does anyone know any one in AUS that sells cylinder seal kits with the special spanner for a seastar HC5345
if anyone has any info or has experienced this in the past would appreciate any info

cheers

Brad

When comparing part prices, I've always found Challenge Marine much better than hayway.

If you can get the top off take the seals into Coventry's or any other seal/bearing shop up there and they will be able to find a match for them at a fraction of the price.

The spanner thingy looks like one for your disc grinder, may have to make one up to suit the unit.

cheers yep

the spanner is the same as a grinder (pin spanner) just a different size to any grinder i have or have seen(typical), that is the cheap bit anyway can get one for $5US
dont have a lathe which i would need to turn up a tapered fitting to get the seal over the threaded section of the cylinder

will probably order fromt the US got a mate who has ordered from the same shop and had no dramas. I think once i have the seal in my hand i will take it to the seal shop to get a few spares, that way i have all the tooling i need for any next times.

still a lot cheaper than AUS or replacing the whole cylinder should be able to do it for $130, next time probably only about $25

i disagree totally with you till i would never set foot back in challenge marine again burnt too many times hayway are much superior for expertise service and most of all price you just have to know how to deal with people

$300 for a HC5345? where is that?

anyway 300 bucks v's 130 which will make mine as good as new, its a no brainer

ordered today will be here in 5 days

i know i should try by aus but 217 plus postage v's 124 delivered to my door, looks like my dollars go to propping up the US economy. Even so, the local distributer purchases it from the US anyway, just with his bit on top.

Does anyone know if the seal kit is better than original because after only one season the ram is leaking badly from both sides. If not then I might change brands.

It will depend on how much

It will depend on how much wear is on the actual shaft. If the shaft is worn and not just the seals then a seal kit is not going to fix the issue.

It depends on maintenance

As said above, if the ram is scored or marked it will cut out the seals.  Most important thing is to wash them down after each use, clear off any salt and then dry it out. If left wet dust and crap can adhere to the ram and cut the seals the next time the ram moves.

At nearly $300 for a seastar seal kit and approximately  $450-500 for a seastar ram or $600 for a hydrive ram you have to wonder if the seal kit is worth it.
