Second time in two weeks
After watching the weather for most of the week we made the decision to hit the water again on sunday. With the light westerly winds forecast we thought we would stay in close again and hit the same area as last time.
We pulled up and sussed out the drift direction as to where to drop the pick. after a quick look i moved the boat around onto a nice looking spot with some fish showing on the sounder. Anchor set and lines down and it didnt take long for sandy to hook up on something worth while. After a short fight up came a kg of around 1kg mark (yet again). But unfortunately it all went quiet as far as the kg's were concerned.
Then the skippy came on the bite. We landed quite a few over the day with the biggest hitting the 750gm , so not a bad size for in 30mtrs .
The sister in law hooked up on something that gave her a reasonable fight on the light gear, after a short fight she was all smiles with a dhuie, even tho it was only around the 30cm mark it was still a dhuie. The little bloke was released well to grow some more.
The brother in law hooked up to something solid that gave him a big struggle and after about 5 minuets he had the hooks pull on him so he wasnt happy. Altho he probably out fished everyone on the boat so all up he had a great day.
Both Sandy and i got another cuttlie each but this time Sandy's made mine look like a baby, went aprox 4kg. We were thinking about giving up for the day when Sandys rod buckled over and line peeling off the reel. Sandy gave it a good run for its money but unfortunately she couldnt make any ground with this fish. Not knowing what it is so Nick (bro in law) took over the fight. All up it was aroud the 10 minute mark when this huge eagle ray came to the surface . Released well and swam off strong.
The whole day was relaxing and enjoyable altho not many fish were taken we still had a fun day out there.Arriving back at the ramp some of the point peron locals came straight over to see what we had for them. Luckily we had kept a few wrasse just for this situation . The Pelicans down there are friendly and they got a feed .
All up for the day .Sandy 1 nice kg, some wrasse, a huge cuttlie and a big eagle ray. Nick heaps of skippy and wrasse along with probably the smallest gurnard i have ever seen (10cm) .Debbie (sis in law) a few skippy 1 small dhuie and a few wrasse. Myself , around 12 skippy ,1 cuttlie around the 2kg mark and a few wrasse
All up it was a fun day with only about 10 fish and 2 cuttlies taken home for a feed. (Which tasted very nice, Marinated garlic cuttlie and pan fried fish with fresh steamed vegies) .... Sorry no pics, but may be able to get a couple off the camera in the next day or two

Never lost the bug, just
Never lost the bug, just couldnt relieve the itch while the boat was getting fixed. One thing tho, what is a day off ? we still have to go and open the shop in the evening, so for us its up at 5.30 , leave home at 6 , hit water at 7 , back in at 2 , home at 3 , showers and clean cloths and at the shop by 4.30 at the latest . So can you please explain what a day off is .
But it is nice getting out there

if you go the winch, get the
if you go the winch, get the lewmar 700 series(not the pro fish, free fall modle, they tangle up).
i looked at a lot of winchs before i got mine and talked to a lot of people, 99% of them said stay away from free fall!
i use mine all the time now, and it is great not having to hand pull.
i just got some prices for a freind, winch from the states inc post and in aussie dollars$998, delta anchor, bow sprit to suit,100mtrs rope 50 of chain form witworths plus afew shackles and so on was from memory $450.
i only went 50mtrs or rope, 50mtrs chain on mine and have never got to the rope yet.

Once people have gypsy
Once people have gypsy winches, they tend to favor really long lengths of chain because some winches don't handle the transition between chain and rope well, and because they don't have to pull it themselves.
Too long a chain though, it causes a lot of tangles in reef country, at least two board members have blown up winches on reef-fouled chain.

i know where you are coming
i know where you are coming from till, but i never anchor on reef as a rule and mainly went for the chain because of the probs you speak about, also the extra weight of the chain when in sand helps with anchoring.
i have swam around the bay at rotto and all the boats with chain tend to have less movement of the anchor, when they use the std 3mtr chain it is alwasys coming of the bottom and pulling on the anchor.
i hope theis makes sense...., but if you get the chance to snorkel around a lot of boats anchored, have a look and you will see what i mean.
cheers

Ahh see the thing is, I've
Ahh see the thing is, I've dived a few times to unfoul them for people, so I know what it looks like.
There is no standard length of chain thats appropriate for every boat, certainly there is too short, but I personally feel there is too long too.

Good Effort
Nice work again Russ and Sandy. Shame the eagle ray wasn't a decent dhu or snapper though.

thanks guys. Colin, skippy
thanks guys.
Colin, skippy king , yeah right, more like the bait master
Wade, no Sandy hasnt lost her touch, but its me that puts the bat in the right spot
Soupy, yeah we know what you mean. thought it might have been a dhuie at the start then when we couldnt get it off the bottom for the first couple of minutes we figured it might be a ray
Carnarvonite, the cuttlie was great bt the secret to the big ones is to cut them up real thin then fast cook on high heat, better than squid imo. 2 feeds of them in 2 weeks , looking forward to the next feed now
